MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Frinton On Sea CC 1st XI on Sat 04 Sep 2021 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 9 wickets
Match report
Potts v Comber
Olly won the toss yet again (more about that later) and invited Frinton to bat.
In walked a giant of a man in the name of Michael Comber who smote Rashy for two fours in his first over. Tristan kept Christopher Harris quiet for 5 balls and then got him LB with his 6th. In walked Barney Morton who received 12 balls scoring 1 run in the process before Rashy had him LB as well. Meanwhile the giant had scored34! Next was Tom Sinclair and by the time he was out with 7 runs to his name, Frinton were on 95. The majority of these were by the giant but 13 were wides and a no-ball! After 9 overs Cruiky was invited to bowl, a prospect he didn’t look too happy about. Who can blame him! But after a good first over, In his second over he conceded 18 runs but had Sinclair caught with his 9th ball of the over, and in his third, 13 and 3 wides. We were a little surprised when he came on for a fourth over with the giant still in full control but with his second ball of the over, clean bowled him with a pearler. Score 101 for 4, Comber with 75 of them. Well bowled Alex. You could feel the tension lift straight away. After that a few overs passed by and the score moved on to 147 when 3 wickets fell in 3 overs, repeated 4 overs later and Frinton were all out. Nic and Darren cleaned up the tail as they normally do with one brilliant caught and bowled by Darren. (See picture in News items). Total score was 162 with the second highest scorer Mr Extras with 30. This was a lack lustre performance by the opposition or maybe they thought they would bowl us out very cheaply as they did at Frinton.
Unfortunately for them we have our own giant called Potticary and he soon dispelled any notion Frinton may have had about that. Appropriately, perhaps, Comber opened the bowling as well as the batting but not as rewardingly. After 5 overs he had conceded 41 runs with 3 glorious sixes in the 5th over by Potts. After this, runs came quickly and easily to both Jack and Darren and in the 20th over with Jack on 95, a smidge slower than last week, he skied one to Barney Morton. By then the score was 143 and the match all but over. Darren carried on with Tris as partner and finished with 52 not out. Another excellent batting performance by him even if it was overshadowed by Potts. Man of the match award goes to Alex Cruikshank for bowling Comber.
Perversely the moment the match was finished, the sun came out as if to chastise us for moaning about the non-existent summer.
On a personal note, I'm not sure if I was having a performance check or not but it was a pleasure and a privilege to be ably assisted in the scorebox by the club President.
Quiz for the statisticians;
1) This season we have played 15 matches so far (6 were cancelled) and Olly won the toss in 14 of them. What are the odds against him winning the final toss at Sudbury?
2) How many maidens were bowled in this game?
3) How many balls did Potts face in his innings.
4) This was the earliest finishing match I can remember. What was the official finishing time?
Answers in an email to me. No prizes this week, not even an all-expenses-paid 1 weeks holiday in Afghanistan!
Late News. Jack Potticary with 596 runs, Darren Ironside with 582 and Nic Smit with 522 have all moved into the top ten of the EAPL most runs scored.
