MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Horsford CC 1st XI on Sat 24 Apr 2021 at 11:00

Match report Having been put in by Horsford, Mildenhall en masse more or less, set about the bowlers with abandon, having been given the green light by Rashy hitting the opening ball of the match for 6 over square leg. The score was ticking along nicely until Read joined Binny and managed to slow the scoring rate considerably. Nevertheless the first 5 batsmen all made double figures such that we were 5 for 120 at the halfway stage. Unfortunately Ollie and Matt lost their wickets quickly but The Ironman got things going again with 48 off 49 balls and Tom and Jon scurried along scoring ones and twos at will. We finished with 227 which might have been 30 or 40 too few against one of the top sides but which we felt might be too many for Horsford.
And so it proved although not quite as easily as we thought. The first two wickets were dispatched quickly by Rashy but Jason Reynolds hung around doggedly until he was uprooted by the Ironman. That was followed in the next over by Rashy trapping Marillier leg before and then In the next over Darren had Binney nicely caught in the slips by the skip. With three quick wickets in the bag you would be forgiven for, in the words of Kenneth Wolstenholme , thinking it was all over. But Ryan Findlay and Ashley Watson had other ideas and put on another 81 runs before Nick Smit had Findlay caught on the boundary by Darren Ironside. Very quickly after that Watson was out leg before for Nick’s second wicket. The end was nigh and they lasted 44 overs scoring 184 all out.
Best of the bowlers was Rashy with 4 for 22 off 10 overs.
It's great to see our late middle order batsmen looking to score ones and twos every ball which contributes massively to the overall score. Keep it up lads.
Next week we go to Swardeston who today, surprisingly, lost to BSE by 1 run. Hmmm!
The MCC President has commented that he cannot remember anyone hitting a six off the first ball of a league match at Mildenhall. Can you?
