Match report A Thriller in Wamilla
After weeks of conditions more akin to rugby and football, at last the cricketing gods served up a stage more appropriate to the beautiful game. Hardly a cloud in sight, the wind non existent and the temperature set fair. The ground was swathed in sunshine and looked absolutely pristine. Congratulations to everyone responsible for that. The bar was open, and the crowds drove in. Cars all round the ground, picnics, dogs running around (Grrh!) children playing rolly polly, and, yes, the players on centre stage in white. Glory, glory, hallelujah!

So, what could the players serve up for us! Well, they didn’t disappoint. A classic game of cricket, eight hours of constant changes of fortune for both sides and at the end, a draw. What! Neither side won! I hear you say. No, this is cricket, remember!

Ollie put the opposition in and, as predicted, Sam Arthurton set about improving his position as the EAPL highest scoring player so far and dug in. Tom and Tris threw everything at them for an hour until the 15th over when Spelman rashly whipped one off his legs from Tom into the safe hands of Jon Allen. In this time Gt. W. had only managed to score 32 runs. Clearly after several months of rain, the ball was not coming on to the bat very well as my fellow scorer, also called Spelman, explained to me in full detail! This was borne out by later analysis in that only a total of 42 boundaries were scored in the whole match of 120 overs.
The next wicket didn’t fall until the 35th over when Gt. W. had amassed a mere 94 runs. This was the first of Matt’s 4 wickets who was once again Mildenhall’s most successful bowler with 4 for 45 off 12, closely followed by Rashy with 3 for 30 off 12.2 overs. It was good to see ‘Worthy’ back for his first appearance in the firsts for at least 2 years with figures of 1 for 33 off 10.
Wickets then fell at regular intervals and Gt. W. were eventually all out for 208 in the 63rd over leaving Mildenhall to score 209 in 57 overs.
We didn’t get off to a good start as both openers (Darren and Jon!) were out by the 5th over for a score of 13. However, Potts and Nic got going and the runs came steadily with another 55 off 14 overs. Then disaster when Nic pulled something, not the ball but a muscle or so it seemed, and had to retire injured hopefully to return later if needed. Ollie strode in to accompany Potts to the winning line but unfortunately Potts, clearly effected by the change of events immediately belted one right down the throat of Sam Arthurton. Shortly after Ollie was deceived by a straight’un and was bowled. All of a sudden we were in a bit of trouble.
But Rashy and Tom Allen had other ideas and saw off the next 15 overs without mishap with a stand of 52 before Tom Allen was caught on the boundary. Rashy was out 6 overs later with a well crafted score of 59, off 64. Compare that with Arthurton’s 60 off 121! In came Worthy who kept Tris company for the next 10 overs but runs were hard to come by due to the combination of some excellent bowling and the slow wicket and only one boundary was scored during the rest of the innings. Tris was out in the 51st over and then Matt was unluckily given out to the only LBW decision of the entire match! Nic hobbled back in with Darrel as his runner and he and Worthy scraped together 1s and 2s until the last over when, with the entire fielding team on the boundary and needing 8 to win, Nic was caught near the boundary for 27. From then on Pete protected his wicket successfully to see out the draw.
Overall, despite Matt’s unfortunate dismissal and Nic’s injury just as we were taking control of the game, it was a close match, evenly contested and a fair result. But most importantly a wonderful game of cricket which the crowd obviously enjoyed as well as most were still there at 7.30 when it ended. And the winners? Cricket of course!
