Match report
What an odd day in Ipswich. It was raining but not much. But there was no doubt it had been raining a lot and the ground was pretty wet. It was also very cold. Evidence of this was seeing the MCC manager striding about in his shorts as if it was 30degrees and a little later appearing in his sowesters! An inspection was held about 11am and eventually it was decided to give it a couple of hours and then have another look. After a period of dryness It was decided to try and make a start whereupon the heavens opened again. “Let’s go home! This is ridiculous!” No one actually said it but everyone, apart from the umpires, and especially the scorers, was thinking it - you could tell. Then another period of dryness and the umpires tried one more time and we got started at 2.30pm on a 30 over game. This was a brave decision by the umpires and to be fair it was the correct one although it didn’t seem so at the time. MCC had won the toss a little earlier and had decided to bat and so it was.
Tom did his swash buckling routine and was soon out for 13 off 13 balls. Nic Smit joined Tristan and they proceeded to form the partnership which probably won the game for us scoring 103 off 106 balls including some stunning drives from Nic and some powerful pulls by Tris. Most unusually Jack was unable to add many today but Darren and Ollie ploughed another 51 runs from 39 balls. It was about this time that Jack Beaumont put himself on to bowl and for a few overs threatened to considerably slow the run rate but Ollie and Darren soon put paid to that and the innings ended with 192 runs. Was this enough we asked ourselves. Well, the answer was “Yes it was.” “ Plenty!”
The home side started very hesitatingly scoring only 23 of the first 8 overs with all wickets intact. At the same time we were 58/1. After 16 overs they were 48/2 we were 96/1. The writing was on the wall. Credit for this must go to the bowlers who applied themselves diligently and were very frugal with the extras apart from the first 2 overs which is allowed! The economy rates for all our bowlers was under 5 except Tristan who was only over by a smidgeon. The pick of these was again Mr Baker with 6 overs, 1 for 12 off 6 and Darren Ironside with 2 for 24 off 6. The two of them in harness certainly restricted the batting at what might have been a critical time. Good stuff. And so, in the end, an easy win for MCC.
And then we realised that what we hadn’t noticed was the weather. It hadn’t rained since we started and in fact by the time we had finished the sky was blue with white clouds skudding about. An odd day indeed.
It must be said three cheers for the umpires for being courageous. 25 points is much better than 7.
