MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Copdock & Old Ipswichian CC 1st XI on Sat 31 Jul 2021 at 11:00

Match report Nic gets his ton at last. After a week of THE HUNDRED with its crash, bang, wallop format, today we were treated to a different form of the game, a far cry from the former. This was a more dour format, comprising 120 overs of block, defend and protect your wicket at all cost. To be fair to Mildenhall, Copdock who arrived with three covid enforced changes to their published side, set their stall out early. In hindsight, having won the toss, Olly should have asked them to bat but its easy to be clairvoyant after the event.
So, Mildenhall batted first and put on a decent score of 240 for 8 off 63 overs. Stars of the show were Nic with 107 and Darren with 55 who carried his bat through to the 42nd over before falling LBW. Congratulations to Nic for his first century for MCC and to both Nic and Darren for being in the top ten of the EAPL batting league.
Clearly Copdock didn’t fancy getting anywhere near this target and decided to be dogged in defence. They underestimated Jack ‘Notsoluvly’ though as he tried to decapitate all who had the temerity to stand their ground. He didn’t hang about neither, making contact with Sam Webb-Snowling’s helmet in his second over with a vicious bouncer. This left a nasty dent in the helmet and induced Sam’s retirement from the arena. Hugh Thomas came in and stayed for 11 overs making 32 runs before Baker had him LBW. This heralded the arrival of the gutsy youngster Donald Mlambo in the 14th over and immediately Jack ‘Notsoluvly’ was handed the ball and got him in the shoulder. After a bit of massage and a drink the young lad regained his composure and stuck it out. Tthis obviously un-nerved Jack Beaumont who had so far resisted everything thrown at him but suddenly lobbed a catch to Baker off Notsoluvly. At this point Copdock closed ranks and only one more wicket fell and that not until the 44th over when Jacob Marston was caught behind off 'notsoluvly'. By this time they had scored only 135 runs and were intent on just staying put, which they did with ease. Their star of the show was clearly Donald Mlambo who faced 118 balls from all of our bowlers and remained bruised, but unbeaten on 48. Well done the Don!
Finally we wish the injured players of Copdock a speedy recovery and no hard feelings.
