Match report
Another cliff hanger!
Well! Who would have thought that up? After last week’s game when our last two batsmen resisted all attempts to remove them and against all the odds, scored the runs to secure victory, this week the same thing happened except that we were the victims and not the victors.
The situation was created by the good old British summer of course. Having lost the toss for the first time this summer, Mildenhall were asked to bat. After 28 overs Nic and Matt were going fairly comfortably with 107 runs on the board for the loss of Potts, Darren and Rashy when the umpires decided enough was enough and stopped the game. The time was nearly lunchtime anyway so it seemed to be the right decision. Some three and a half hours later we returned and Mildenhall’s innings was declared finished after 28 overs at 107 for 3 and Sawston were tasked with scoring 171 in 28 overs to win. They weren’t very happy about this but such are the vagaries of the DLS system so that was that.
Sawston set about their task and showed us why they are top of the table at present. Wickets were taken regularly but runs were coming faster. Their 9th wicket fell in the 23rd over with Sawston still needing 26 to win. It looked like a Mildenhall win but Alexander Stafford had other ideas and scored the majority of the runs needed, it must be said, with ease. He ended with a flourish hitting Tris for 4 into the covers.
The better all round side won but at least we put up an improved performance than at Sawston on a bright sunny day earlier in the season.
Baker again put in the best bowling performance with 2 for 22 off 6 and so far this season is Mildenhall’s most economic bowler with figures of 17 wickets for 248 runs off 79 overs with an economy rate of 3.14.
