MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat v Woolpit CC Saturday 1st XI on Sat 23 Apr 2022 at 12:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
Batting first on a great track at Wamil Way, Mildenhall 2s reached a solid total of 274-5.
The backbone of that total was a superb chance less 107 off 133 balls from Jon Allen. That century follows up his half-century the previous week.
As in that game, Allen and Palmer started well and punished the loose bowling racing to an 80 run partnership in the 12th over before Palmer departed for 43, bowled by Block.
After the loss of skipper Ryan Clark, Conor Cobbold and Allen moved the score along nicely, taking the singles on offer and putting away the bad balls. The pair constructed a partnership of 135 before Cobbold lofted a catch to Munday off Northcote and was out for 61.
In the push for runs towards the end of the innings Allen also fell to Northcote caught by Collins for a fantastic 107, Fletcher was stumped by Holmes off Collins having just crunched a boundary through extra cover for 5 and then Luke Ellis (21 off 24 balls) and Ash Clark (15 off 10) scored well to take the score to 274-5 off their 50 overs.
The pick of the Woolpit bowling was Block with 10-1-38-1.
Collins took 2-60 off 10 and Northcote 2-36 off 6.1 overs.
In their reply, Woolpit had an early wobble with Will Parker caught behind by Cobbold off Heywood in the first over. Despite feeling unwell and on a number of occasions having to take his time and compose himself, opener Munday, put together a 118 run partnership with Karl Holmes.
Holmes was run out by a great bit of fielding from Cobbold for 37 off 44 balls and then Munday fell to Mo Ubaid well caught in the deep by Jonah Handy for 81 off 77 balls.
Hussain then took 2 wickets in 2 balls, firstly deceiving Northcote to have him stumped by Cobbold for 9 and then Cobbold caught a thick edge off Newcombe’s first ball.
Thomas then steadied the ship with a solid half-century (53 off 74)before becoming another victim of keeper Cobbold, off the bowling of Jonah Handy.
Woolpit were well placed (162-3) but then MCC 2s fought back really well (229-7) in a game that was becoming an absolute classic and clearly one that was important to the Woolpit skipper who, as well as taking drinks and gloves on to the field on a couple of occasions, took the time to walk on to the field of play to remind the umpires of the time limit for completing their innings.
As a result, unfortunately, a great game reaching a crescendo, completely in the balance, with players battling to win the game for their respective teams ended in a disappointing finish as 12 penalty runs were awarded to the Woolpit total at the start of the 48th over.
That left them requiring 4 to win off 2 overs.
This they did with 9 balls to spare.
J Handy took 3-57, Hussain 2-52, Heywood 1-53 but the pick of the bowling was Mo Ubaid with 1-26 off 9.3 overs. His last over cut short by having to leave the field with a broken finger. Well bowled Mo. We hope your finger repairs quickly.
A fine spell from Mo but generally even with the unfortunate penalty runs, taking a chunk off the 31 wides and 5 no balls bowled by the team would have made a huge difference to the final result.
Very positive signs for the Super 2s though, solid batting with the scoreboard ticking over throughout the innings.
A great century by Jon Allen, Dom Palmer looking in good knick, Cobbold batting well for a half-century and 16 year old Ubaid with a great spell of bowling.
Well played and thank you Woolpit for what was going to be a great game!
