Kesgrave CC 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat on Sat 30 Apr 2022 at 12:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 9 runs
Match report
MCC 2s travelled to Kesgrave for a key game between two of last seasons promoted teams.
Skipper Ryan Clark won the toss and decided to bat.
The opening bowling pair of Conor Betts and Sam Colver started well and bowled very tightly early on. Jon Allen fell lbw to Betts for 4 with the score on 8.
Ryan Clark joined Dom Palmer at the crease and they started to break the shackles of the Kesgrave bowling.
Palmer punished anything short and Clark looked solid at the other end.
Having reached 42, Palmer was snapped up by Colver with a sharp caught and bowled. His innings included 9 fours.
Colver continued to bowl well and Cobbold became his second victim lbw without scoring. Ed Fletcher came in at 4 and put together a partnership of 87 runs with Clark before Fletcher was bowled by Garnham for 32. Chasing late runs, Du Plooy (0),Ash Clark (2) and Handy (0) then also fell to Garnham in his fine spell before Heywood with 19 off 21 helped Ryan Clark take the score beyond 200.
A fine ‘captains innings’ came to end when Clark was run out on the last ball of the innings for 104.
MCC 2s posted 222-9 off their 50 overs.
For the bowling side, Garnham was the highlight with 5-37, Colver bowled tightly for 2-31 off 10 overs and Betts took 1-37 off 7.
The Kesgrave innings began steadily with the score reaching 31 before Ben Colver fell to Handy, caught behind by Cobbold for 8. Handy was bowling sharply with Heywood at the other end finding a fine line and length. However, again, too many extras and solid batting from M Oliver and Skipper Mike Warne kept the scoreboard ticking over.
A side strain injury to Heywood meant that he couldn’t bowl any more than 4 overs, going for just 13 runs. Ash Clark replaced him and kept things tight with a spell of 5 overs for 10 runs.
With no further wickets falling, M Worne and opener Oliver took Kesgrave to a really strong position and they were looking like the favourites to win.
The middle overs were assigned to Jim Allen and Murtaza Hussain. Apart from a couple of overs, Allen maintained a good line and length and made the batsmen play, finishing with 1-52 from his 10 overs. At the other end Murti, ‘the magician’, bowled a remarkable spell of 10-4-12-4 to really turn the game in MCC 2s favour. The pressure started to tell. The score went from 134-2 to 178-6.
M Worne fell to Hussain, bowled for 44, Oliver was caught by R Clark off Jim Allen for 33 off 80 balls, S Worne was bowled by Hussain for 31. Murti then also took the wickets of Young, caught by Palmer and S Colver, caught by Du Plooy.
Betts and Garnham then fought back as a fine game ebbed and flowed. Jim Allen was replaced by ‘all-rounder’ Palmer for his first bowl of the season and he held things together well, doing a great job for the team by securing the wicket of Betts for 34 off 38 balls and Garnham for 12. At this stage, Kesgrave were 207-8, requiring 16 more to win.
For the last 4 overs, skipper Clark handed the responsibility of bringing the game home to the pace duo of Handy and Ash Clark. They stood up to the task well with Handy being too quick for Godward, bowling him for 1, and Howard falling to Clark on the last ball of the 49th over, well caught behind by Cobbold off a thick edge.
Handy’s figures were 6-1-32-2 and Ash Clark finished with 1 for 13 off 6 overs.
Kesgrave were all out for 213, losing by 9 runs.
Thank you and well done to Kesgrave for an excellent game that could have gone either way.
