Witham CC 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 07 May 2022 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 45 tuns
Match report
Mildenhall travelled to Witham with a background of low cloud and threatening rain. The team were hoping to bounce back from their defeat by Bury St Edmunds the previous week. No one however could have predicted how this match turned out. Rain caused a delay of half an hour. Witham won the toss and elected to field. With dark cloud still overhead Mildenhall began in brisk fashion with Jack Potticary seeing off opening bowler Billy Moulton Day after he had bowled just 3 overs and conceded 23 runs. The more circumspect Darren Ironside (20) helped the openers reach 48 before he was caught behind by Kaan Hawes off Onke Nyaku. By now rain was falling but the players played on through it allowing the uncovered surface to freshen up. As the rain eased Witham replaced Nyaku with McDonald and he and Garrard applied the breaks as Mildenhall spent the next 8 overs scoring at 2 an over. In the 18th over Potticary also fell caught behind having made 37, leaving Mildenhall on 66 for 2. Olly Jeffries now joined Joe Tetley and they two found advancing the run rate difficult. The pair added 28 before Jeffries (16) was bowled by Greg Stephens with just the 3rd ball of his spell. Captain Jake Wakelin then bowled in tandem with Stephens and the pair tore through the Mildenhall middle order. 94 fo2 soon became 112 for 8 with only Joe Tetley (20) getting into double figures. Wakelin took 3 wickets; however, the standout performance went to Stephens picking up 5 for 22. Jack Loveday made a brave cavalier 15 before Mildenhall were bowled out for 135.
Analysing the innings Hawes took 5 catches behind the stumps, there was one lbw, and three batsmen were bowled, which suggested there could be help from the pitch. Loveday was the only outfield catch and this had happened in his effort to force the scoring.
Captain Darren Ironside chose Gunawardana to open the bowling to get a breakthrough, but after watching Tom Rash trouble the batsmen from the other end he quickly replaced Gunawardana with Tristian Blackledge. Rash bowling with purpose and trying to make up for his disappointment with the bat broke through in his 2nd over as he hit the stumps of Michael Godwin (7) and it was Rash again who trapped James Smith (4) lbw with the score on 32. Opener Chris Huntingdon was trying to force the score along but Rash and Blackledge contained them to 3 an over. The match turned on its head when Jack Loveday was introduced after 12 overs. His first ball captured Huntingdon (20) with a well taken catch by wicketkeeper Potticary. Lovedays 3rd over saw Cody McDonald back in the pavilion after his stumps were flattened. Mildenhall began to dream when with no addition to the scoreboard, Wakelin (4) was also bowled this time by Blackledge, and Witham stood at 54 for 5. Loveday was fired up and rightly got a rebuke from the umpires for his over colourful language. However, proving actions speak louder than words he turned in one of his best performances for the 1st X1. The Witham innings became a procession as Loveday claimed 3 more wickets that included a fine outfield catch by Tim Catley and with Rash helping himself to a 3rd victim thanks to a skier that fell into the safe hands of Matt Allen, Witham were close to defeat. James Suett (25) gave some resistance but when he tried to force Loveday he was caught, and Witham succumbed to 90 all out. Loveday was the player of the day with 5 for 34 off 9.5 overs. Rash collected 3 for 12. A team performance that could be summed up as going from Zero’s to Hero’s. It was satisfying to see captain Darren Ironside marshalling his side so well in this victory.
Mildenhall have a week off next week when they can reflect on lessons learned from this match!
