Saffron Walden CC 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 21 May 2022 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Mildenhall CC v Saffron Walden CC
There were clearly demons in the pitch which were not apparent from the scorebox as after winning the toss and putting the opposition in, they struggled to get runs, albeit from fairly accurate bowling. In the eighth over Tristan got one to rise a bit tempting Nick Taylor to have a slash and he top edged it and Joe quickly plucked it out of the air; 1 for 21. The next wicket to fall was that of Alex Peirson beautifully caught by Potts at full stretch down the leg side when the score was only 37 after 12 overs. Rash’s first wicket. Again, play ambled along for another 7 overs before Ashleigh Cox was easily caught by Potts off Jack Loveday so after 20 overs SW were 55 for 3 and looking uncomfortable. Next to go was Jade Deklerk, their overseas player, who was adjudged caught behind off Tristan although he wasn’t very happy about it. Shortly after that Rashy bowled Joshua Down, who had managed to stay in for nigh on 19 overs before succumbing although he only scored 19 runs in total so not a lot to show for it. There were no more mishaps before lunch.
After lunch the home side obviously decided to change tactics and immediately set about Naveen who had bowled 2 maidens before lunch whereupon Harris and Sneath smote him for 18 in one over. A lesser bowler would have wilted at this but not Naveen. The first ball of his next over was well wide of off stump and Harris made an indelicate swipe of it and Tash snapped it up. To say that Harris was annoyed with himself would be an understatement. When he returned to the dressing room we all had to wear ear plugs to protect ourselves from his wrath.
The innings dwindled to its inevitable conclusion with Naveen getting his customary 3 wickets but it would be unfair not to mention the last wicket, a run out of the non striker by a very bit of quick thinking by Skip Darren. Worth a look at the highlights on You-Tube. All out for 118 in 50 overs.
One would have thought that our strike power would have made short work of this meagre total but it wasn’t to be. Darren was caught by first slip in the first over and next was Ollie, caught and bowled by Hancock in the 4th over. Not a good start. Joe and Potts then moved the score along to 33 before Potts was caught behind (!) for a mere 15. However this seasons new recruits Tim and Joe steadied the ship and sailed it safely to 116 before Joe holed out to Alex Peirson in the deep. There was an interesting meet of bodies which can be seen on the highlights, You-tube video around the seven minute mark of the Mildenhall innings. Don’t let Luvvers see it!
So, all in all a good win but probably just as well they didn’t put 200 on the scoreboard.
Clubhouse appraisal. Nice facilities with clean and tidy toilets and good grub. 9/10.
