Match report
The least said about this one the better really. However, one must take the rough with the smooth and this was certainly rough. Unfortunately, the gods also contrived against us by removing our two best seam bowlers, Rashy and Tris, the former because of his work and the latter through injury. Tris’s injury didn’t come to light until after the start when it was too late to enlist a replacement.
Having won the toss and choosing to field and then knocking the opponents over for 217, one would be forgiven for being optimistic about the eventual result. Tris not being able to bowl and the absence of Rashy seemed not to have affected our attack as badly as we might have thought. This situation also created the opportunity for others to perform, notably Matt (Baker) Allen who reeled off 18 overs without a break (except for lunch!) and got his first ‘five for’ for the 1st XI, for 48 runs at an economy rate of 2.7. Good stuff. The opportunity was also given to Jonah Handy to show off his skills who did so with aplomb. His final figures of 10.2.33.1 were a credit to his control and speed and his ball to George Hooper which bowled him is worth a rerun on YouTube. GW used up their full quota of 64 overs leaving Mildenhall to score 218 for 25 points.
Potts and Pete started off in the usual fashion, scoring 52 and looking good before Pete misread a beauty from Brett Stollworthy and lost his off stump. Potts continued to stroke the ball around beautifully when Stollworthy, who had been bowling economically, induced him to give a catch to the keeper. Darren, who had come in at the dismissal of Pete, and who was also looking comfortable at the crease for a change, suddenly tried to hook Charly Rogers and was caught easily by George Hooper at square leg. This was the start of the collapse and was the first wicket for Charly Rogers who went on to get 5 more before our innings finished with a rather under par total of 118. In addition to missing their bowling, our middle order batting also missed the runs that Rashy and Tris add but this is no excuse for such a lack lustre performance from some regular players.
Next week we are Bury St Edmunds and hopefully will keep our record of 100% away wins intact.
