MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Copdock & Old Ipswichian CC 1st XI on Sat 16 Apr 2022 at 11.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 6 wickets
Match report
MCC won by 3 wickets, a satisfactory start to the season one would think; a win is a win however it arrives. And against a good side with whom we have shared the points more or less over the seasons.
Darren won the toss and asked Copdock to bat. Rashy and Tris bowled the first ten overs and restricted the opposition to 27 runs. Then Luvvers and Naveen took over and the mixture of slow left arm and hideous pace took its toll with Luvvers getting Sam Arthurton caught behind with what looked like an exocet from the scorebox. Good stuff. Three overs later Luvvers did the same to Jack Beaumont who this time holed out to Naveen at mid-something or other. After another ten overs of this Darren took over from Luvvers and shortly after Alex Oxley seemed to get confused and found himself floundering out of his crease and was quickly run out by Joe Tetley. A little while later Naveen got his first wicket for Mildenhall in his 9th over, Donald Mlambo caught and bowled. This was just reward for a tidy spell of 10 overs on the spin, 1 for 31. Together with the skip they kept a rein on the scoring and after 30 overs Copdock were a measly 96 for 4. They did manage to up the run rate for the last 20 overs accumulating a further 114 runs for a total of 210 or 8 off 50 overs. Hero for Mildenhall was Jack Loveday with 4 for 56 who seems to improve season on season, week on week. Keep it up Jack. And some good all round fielding with three catches to Potts behind the stumps, two to Naveen, one to Tim Catley and a run-out by Joe Tetley. Good performance!.
Potts and Darren opened for MCC as usual but the former seemed not to be his usual self. His first 6 balls were all dot balls. As were Darren’s but this is more in keeping with Darren’s style of batting. In his next over he (Potts) scored a total of 1 and then 6 more dot balls. And it gets worse. In the next over Darren was bowled for 0 off 9 balls. After 8 overs MCC were 8 for 1. So as not to dwell on this period of play let’s just say that after 16.5 overs Potts was removed from the arena by Chris Swallow adjudged lbw. His figures at the time were 26 off 63, normally they would have been 63 off 26 but everybody must have an off day occasionally. He said later in the bar that he wanted others to have the opportunity to bat, an invitation eagerly accepted by Joe Tetley and Baker who carved a much needed partnership of 119 runs which completely took the game away from Copdock. Matt scored 52 and then immediately gave his wicket away but Joe went on to score a magnificent 83 off 91 balls and finished the innings not out. Well done everyone, a very good start to the season but before you all get carried away did you see what Sawston did to Swardeston. Probably best not to look!
