MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Great Witchingham CC 1st XI on Sat 16 Sep 2023 at 11.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 62 runs

Match report With nothing on the result for either team, one would have thought that a boring draw was in prospect. Far from it! Despite the lack of incentive, the result was difficult to predict until our opponents went into freefall around 16:45.
Blackledge won the toss and elected to bat, the object being to put a big score on the board and then knock them over for less. Well, that all went out of the window from the start. Ironside, not yet fully fit after his injury sustained in June, was first out after 13 balls for 3. Baker was next, for 12 off 17 then Joe with 2 off 8, quickly followed by Olly who managed 11 off 20. After 10 overs and 37 minutes, we were 34 for 4 with 4 top batsmen dismissed for a pittance.
Plan B, bring on the youngsters! Next to go was Ben Palmer but not before he had scored 34, with 7 cracking boundaries, in a partnership of 42. Tris, (not quite so young) entered the stage and with Connor they put on a further 61 before Connor was caught by their keeper for 35 off 68. We were now 133 for 6 and beginning to get a grip on the game. Next to fall was Tris, who, not for the first time this season had helped to steady the ship, contributing 45 off 61 balls, taking the score to 166 for 7. Could we make 200? Of course, we could! Tom was still there, wielding his blade, and he and the rest of the crew saw us through to 201 before Jonah was last out, leaving Mo undefeated on 8.
So, what would Gt W. make of this total. According to Clive, their scorer, no chance and so it was. But it wasn’t all plain sailing. Tillett was quickly removed by Jack, caught behind by our seemingly faultless keeper, but Beazleigh, who came in next was made of sterner stuff. He and Spelman took the score to 50 before Spelman was also caught behind. James Hale came in for a brief stay before he was well caught by Luvvers on the boundary and then Sam Clabburn was bowled by Darren shortly after. During this period, Mo Ubaid had been introduced into the attack and was harshly dealt with by Beazleigh in particular, and Clabburn. Once Clabburn had been removed, things quietened down and Mo started to adjust his length. His first 2 overs had cost 24 runs but the skipper kept him on and was amply rewarded. His next 5 overs went for only 22 more including 2 wickets, one bowled and one LB (the only LB of the match). We can expect some great things from Mo Ubaid next season I think!
Once Beazleigh was out, caught behind off Jonah, for their top score of 49 off 73, the rest of the team subsided and were all out for 139.
A win to finish the season and bag 4th place in the EAPL. Could have been better but could have been much worse too. Well done everybody.

And the final word must go to Connor Cobbold, our man behind the stumps, who not only was a worthy successor to Jack Potticary but also finished top of the EAPL fielders table by a country mile. Congratulations Connor.

A question to finish the season? Nine of the 20 wickets to fall today had something in common. What was it?
Answers on MCC “big squad”. Prize for the first correct answer is two free seats on the next submarine trip to see the Titanic.
