Match report Tristan won the toss, on a bright and fairly sunny day, and put Witham in. It wasn’t long before they started losing wickets. Tris was first with one that cut in from the leg and clean bowled Godwin. Next over Jack got Browne to edge one to Connor who took it nicely. Two down in the 7th over! Strange, this was starting to be scary. Shortly after, Darren came on and after 5 overs , had got rid of Huntington, caught by Joe at mid off and both Cody McDonald and Jake Wakelin caught by Tim Catley in the deep. The total scored by these three was 6. This was getting really scarey! In the meantime, Jordan Hermann had been soldiering on not giving any chances but had only scored 30. No doubt feeling the need to up the run rate, he started to hit out. It took another 10 overs but Saif got him eventually for 55 off 78 balls, caught by Tim Catley again. After that Witham fell away and were all out in the 41st over, for 133. Uncannily close to their score last year of 137.
However, that was the end of any similarity with events of last year. Matt and Darren opened the innings and, without trying to create any records, quietly set about the innings and by the 15th over, when Darren was lb to Stephens, they had put on 73 runs. Commendable and well above the asking rate. That was also the last wicket to fall as Matt and Saif saw off the bowling, scoring the necessary additional 61 runs in 11 overs. Matt was not out scoring 51 off 67 balls, and Saif, 39 off 36. Well done Matt; keep it up!
Mercifully, we scraped the monkey of last year’s fixture off our backs and I promise never to mention it again!
