MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Bury CC on Sat 03 Jun 2023 at 11.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 4 wickets

Match report If you wanted proof that cricket is a team game, this was it. Yes, there were a couple of cameo performances, but they did not win the game, they were the foundation for a team win. But first, our sympathies go to Jon Allen who badly dislocated a finger in the field during the first innings and had to miss the rest of the game. And, also, to Rashy, now of Bury, who was probably playing his last game of the season due to an impending shoulder operation. Tom, hope you make a speedy and full recovery.
Bury won the toss and decided they would bat first, presumably thinking they would put on a decent score and knock us over trying to better it. If so, they didn’t start very convincingly, scoring only 21 runs in the first 10 overs when they lost their second wicket. The first two fell to Tristan. Notably, in this period, we had not bowled any wides or no-balls. Routledge was looking dangerous, and Tom Allen came on to bowl and in his third over had him brilliantly caught and bowled. This was the turning point but not for us, for Bury. Sean Park came in and with Josh Cantrell upped the run rate, keeping their wickets intact for the next 31 overs before Sean was bowled by LDP with score at 163. Nostalgia then crept in and we allowed Rashy to occupy the crease for far too long. He scored 55 runs, enabling BSE to complete their 64 overs with a very respectable score of 260 for 6. This was the highest total we had faced all season so how would we fare? Need you ask!
Darren, not the fastest of scorers, but a reliable and consistent opener blew away the cobwebs and scored a single with his second ball. As if playing ‘Pit-a-Pat’, “Pete” reciprocated and returned a single to Darren, who immediately re-reciprocated with another single. Next over, Darren, walked halfway up the wicket and hit Routledge for three. So, Pete, asserted his authority and hit four consecutive 4s to finish the over. After 2 overs we were 22 for 0 (at the same time BSE were 2 for 0). This was the moment ’BazBall’ came to Mildenhall. After 9 overs, at 62 for 1, Darren exited the scene with 26 off 30 balls. Pete continued for another 4 overs scoring a further 20 runs before playing the strangest of shots and chipped the ball onto his wicket. He had scored 47 off 34. We were now 83 for 3 compared with Bury’s 33 for 2 at the same time. Joe and Ashu then batted for the next 14 overs taking the score to 155. Then Joe was caught behind by Maynard and shortly after, Ashu carried out a strange pirouette and was caught by Cruikshank. You’d have been forgiven for thinking that this would start a panic in the ranks, especially as we were down to 10 batsmen but not a bit of it! For the next 24 overs, Capt. Tris and Olly steered the innings faultlessly, almost to the winning line, before Tris was caught off Cruickshank for 48. In came Luvvers, who, having failed for the first time this season to get a wicket, decided that enough was enough and smashed Jefferson for a 4 and 2 and we had won. Olly was left ‘not out’ on 52.
This was a solid team victory and might be a pivotal point in our season! Well done everyone.
It was also nice to see a bit of camaraderie after the match with players of both sides enjoying a few beers together in the sunshine.
