Match report It was mid-June and at last the sun gods were busy and we had a lovely warm, sunny day.

Mildenhall were asked to bat first and accepted enthusiastically.

Matt and Pete got off to a great start and put on 101 in 24 overs before Harper bowled Matt. Another good 1st wicket partnership to get us going. Unfortunately, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The next few overs saw the demise of Pete who was caught for 62, Saif Zaib for 11, Joe Tetley for a duck and Olly for 5. In the space of 8 overs, we had disintegrated to 125 for 5. Uncharacteristically, Tris also only managed to contribute 9 runs but somehow, Ashu hung in there scoring 31 together with Tom Allen (16), Luke (34) and Jack (22). Between them and ‘extras’ (20) we posted a score of 254 using up 62 of our allotted 64 overs. Not an insurmountable total but one that would give us a chance providing we bowled well.

And we did start off well; after 9 overs the pace of Luvvers had both Boje and Arthurton caught behind and Tris followed up with the wicket of Beaumont, also caught behind, in the 14th over. At 47 for 3 after 14 overs with 3 top batsmen in the pavilion you might have thought that the battle was over but not a bit of it! Oxley and Marston then steadied the ship and took the score to 116 before LDP had Oxley caught in the slips by Tris. At 155, Harper was run out by Joe but then Marston and Mlambo carried the score to 229 before Mlambo was bowled by Tris. The rest was a bit of a blur with all sorts of carryings on and penalty runs being awarded, and lost balls. Eventually we arrived at the point when Copdock needed 15 to win in 2 overs with 2 wickets left. In the 54th over 4 singles and then Froggatt was out caught by Luvvers off Said. Needing 11 off the last over, Jacob Marston, who up to this point had been batting sensibly and safely, unaccountably tried to hoist Tris out of Suffolk and was bowled. This left Swallow, not known for his batting feats, to face the last 5 balls which he did fairly comfortably, much to the relief of Copdock and to the frustration of Mildenhall.

So, all in all, a missed opportunity to cement our place at the top of the Premier League but a fair result after all’s said and done. To the impartial viewer it was probably a brilliant game of cricket.
