Match report
The sun was out, the forecast was good, and everyone was appropriately dressed. Had we known what drama was about to unfold we might have come dressed in something more appropriate to a theatrical occasion!
It all started before the toss when Darren Ironside was injured in the customary warm up before the match. Jack Bowman, who was expecting to be in the 3rds this afternoon, found himself promoted to the 1sts. If he had known how things would turn out he may have refused the invitation!
Swardeston won the toss and opted to bat first. Denmark and Jordan Taylor were looking quite comfortable scoring 5 an over when suddenly, in the 9th over, Jack had them both. First Taylor, a catch by Ash in the slips and then Denmark, caught behind. Thirty nine for 2. Tris then brought on Jonah Handy, newly promoted from the seconds, to have a go. After a wayward 1st over conceding 11 runs, he settled down to a nice rhythm, only conceding a further 24 in the next 7. No wickets but a good start to his debut in the 1sts.
The next wicket was an lbw, the first of only two in the match, in the 21st over. After that, Swardeston gave away very little, batting solidly until the 50th over when they were 255 for 4. They then lost a few wickets during the next 10 overs scoring another 55 runs in the process before declaring on 310 for 8 after 60 overs. A formidable total and one that we had not yet attained this season.
Matt was out third ball, caught behind. Enter our first hero, Ash. In the 5th over Worthington was caught in the slips, in the 8th Joe was bowled, 13th Olly was caught at gully and in the 19th , Tris lbw. Score 73 for 5! All thought of 311 had gone out of the window and survival was the next objective.
Enter stage left, our next hero, LDP! First, there was a quiet period of 7 or 8 overs while Luke and Ash accustomed themselves to the situation. After25 overs they decided to up the tempo, both Ash and Luke scoring boundaries at will, constantly running singles and twos with the odd 6 chucked in for good measure. After 46 overs we were 220 for 5 with a minimum of 14 overs to come; we were beginning to believe, Ash and Luke were bossing the show. Then “Disaster”! LDP was caught by Cooper for 65 off 84. Luvvers had a couple of swats and was then c&b by Rajagu. Connor and Jonah hung around for several overs keeping Ash company before getting out which is when our next, and last hero, Jack Bowman, marched in. All thought of winning had, of course, gone by now, and survival was sacrosanct. Could Jack protect his wicket against all odds? There were 4 overs and three balls to come. Well of course he could. Ash did his best to protect him but he couldn’t face every ball. Each ball Jack faced, and there were 13 of them, seem to take an age to bowl and each one was dealt with by Jack like someone defending his life and the crowd shouted their approval. He didn’t score many runs, 1 in fact, but more importantly, he didn’t lose his wicket either like many before him. Result: match drawn. Phew!
The main hero of this performance was of course Ash with a monumental performance which must be recorded in the MCC annals of great events. He came to the crease 3 balls after the start of our innings and survived the entire innings scoring 153 off 171 balls in 238 minutes and earned an unlikely draw. A truly stupendous and gigantean innings. Ash,s innings was the highest EAPL innings beating Andrew Mawson inning recorded in 2004
