Match report
Mildenhall won the toss and opted to bat. With Ironside out of the side for a few weeks, Worthy joined Matt in the middle. Peter was soon out, caught in the deep in the 5th over after an encouraging start. In the 11th over, Ash, probably still thinking about his monumental effort last week, got a corker from Alex Spears which pitched well outside off stump but cut in and knocked it out of the ground. Three overs later Matt was out playing on to Vandepeer. Since his promotion to the No. 2 spot, Matt has shown considerable maturity in his performances but still shows a tendency to get himself out rather than let the bowler do it. Nevertheless, 38 from 44 shows he can open the innings and get it off to a good start.
After 13 overs we were 63 for 3 and beginning to creak. In the 25th over, Joe was bowled attempting to reverse sweep Callum Guest, and Olly was caught in the deep for 6 off 41 balls. We are now 80 for 5 and in need of some celestial assistance. This came in the form of our skipper who did not let us down. Firstly, Tom Allen hung in with Tris for another 35 runs in 11 overs, before giving way to LDP. The next 13 overs produced 70 runs, Luke scoring 48 of them before being caught. In came the new Jack Loveday, who watched the ball most carefully for a few overs before taking charge. He and Tris set off on a run spree taking the score to 242 before Jack was caught by Calum Guest off Alex Evans. The innings finished in the 63rd over when Tris was caught behind for 62 off 104, leaving Sawston to get 243 off 57 overs to win. This was a much bigger total than we feared earlier on and was due mainly to the middle order batsmen.
Sawston started off very cautiously scoring only 43 in the first 20 overs for the loss of 3 wickets. The first of these was Choudhary in the third over for 3, brilliantly caught by Ash at slip off Loveday. The next was Matthew Hague, caught behind off Tris for 8 and the third was Luke Spears, bowled by Ash for 18 off 64 balls. Callum Guest was next to go, lbw off Ash for 11 , and Alexander Stafford joined Ben Claydon in the middle. Shortly after, Jonah Handy thought he had got his first wicket in the 1sts before the umpire adjudged it a “no ball”. That would have been the wicket of Stafford who then, no doubt relieved by his bit of good fortune, went on the rampage carting the bowlers to all parts of the ground. Meanwhile, Ben Claydon, at the other end, was keeping his wicket intact, giving Stafford the strike as much as possible. In the 47th over, Claydon skied one over Matt’s head, who somehow managed to keep his eye on the ball and against all odds, catch it. However, Stafford was still in and was threatening to win the game single handedly.
Two overs later we had another bit of luck when Stafford was given out lbw to Ash in the 49th over, trying to reverse sweep the ball. In the same over, Ash had Ben Clilverd caught behind for 10. There were now 8 overs left and Sawston needed 60+ runs to win. There was no way they were going to get the runs, but we needed 3 more wickets. Loveday bowled Evans in the next over but Heath and Vandepeer hung on before Heath was lbw to Tris, third ball of the last over. However, the 11th batsman, Mark Smith saved the day for Sawston
Honours for the day go to Matt, Tris, Luke and Jack Loveday for batting and to Ash for bowling with figures of 5 for 55 off 18 at 3.06.
All in all, a fair result, which leaves only 5 points separating the top 5 teams.
