MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Copdock & Old Ipswichian CC 1st XI on Sat 26 Aug 2023 at 11.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Well, I didn’t see that one coming (Part 1)
The forecast for the day was not good with heavy rain promised by mid-afternoon so an unfinished game was on the cards.
We won the toss and asked Copdock to bat which they did but not very well. By the end of the power-play (10 overs) they were 4 down for 16, two to Tris and two to LDP, ably assisted by Connor with three catches and Baker with the other. At this point, Jacob Marston woke up and scored 42 off the next three overs. Time for Saif to get involved. In two overs he saw off both Jack Beaumont and Marston and now they were 64 for 6 off 16 overs and we had only been playing for 51 minutes. The last 4 wickets took a bit longer, lasting until ten past one, scoring another 60 runs for a total of 124.
Jacob Marston was the best batsman with 39 off 40 but there were only 2 other batsmen in double figures. All in all, a poor performance by Copdock.
So, twenty past one, Worthy and Baker went out to face Tim Oakley, Copdock’s overseas fast bowler from Oz. Bowling at a fair pace he conceded 13 runs off his first over, including 4 wides and a no ball. By the end of his spell of 6 overs he had figures of 2 for 41 including 3 wides and 3 no balls. A bit disappointing, I would have said. It was also interesting to note that it took Mildenhall only 1.1 overs to better Copdock’s powerplay total. First out was Worthy, caught behind for 10 off 19, then Matt, who had been batting very well, was also caught behind for 31 off 32, both off Oakley. Olly was next to go, for 12 off 17 at which point several of the fielders showed an unusual interest in Saif’s bat.

Perhaps he was taking orders! Connor, promoted up the order, joined Saif and immediately displayed his batting prowess by scoring a couple of very nice boundaries,

before leaving Saib to knock 18 off the last over to win the match.
The umpires, very sensibly, allowed play to continue to a conclusion rather than stopping for lunch. Match finished at 2.30pm precisely which was very fortunate for us as the sky was looking ominous and sure enough there was a downpour a little later.
Clearly, Saif Zaib, with 45 off 27 and 5 for 12 off 59 deliveries was the man of the match but mention must be made of Connor Cobbold, who’s three catches behind cemented his position on top of the EAPL fielding stats, and Tom’s brother Baker’s continuing performances as an opener and fielder (three more catches today).
