MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat v Worlington CC 1st XI on Sat 11 May 2024 at 12.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost by 34 runs
Match report
Ok! It’s “Be nice to the neighbours week!”
Worlington CC came to Wamil Way, determined not to be beaten by Mildenhall seconds and they did the job on us.
We won the toss and asked the opposition to bat. They responded gratefully and saw off the first 10 overs from Heywood and JKM, not scoring lots of runs but seemingly without a problem. Then Murty was introduced to the fray and in his third over bowled Sean Cooper for 18 off 46. In his next over he had Graham Ford leg before, for 13 off 41 and Worlington were 37 for 2 from 16 overs. The Worlington overseas player, Curtis Cherrington from New Zealand was next and he and Tim Taylor saw off everything that the Mildenhall bowlers could throw at them until the 33rd over when Heywood had Taylor caught behind. Cherrington carried on with Ollie Gallop until the 41st over when Tim Catley caught him off the bowling of Murty for 54 off 62 balls. That was the last wicket to fall and Ollie gallop and Craig Theobald saw off the last 9 overs scoring another 54 runs for a reasonable score of 211 for 4 but not one beyond the range of our boys. Or so one would have thought!
Ben Palmer and Peter Worthington opened the batting for Mildenhall and after 3 overs studying the bowling, Ben hit Theobald for 4 then promptly nicked the next one to 1st slip. In the next over Sean Cooper’s second ball was hit to the boundary by Peter and just like Ben, was bowled by the next one. The delight on the opposition faces when they got the wicket of Peter was understandable; they were aware that he can hit bowlers in this league all round the ground when he wants to and to get him out cheaply lifted their spirits considerably. The whole team screamed “HOWZAT” as one. As the good sportsman he is, Pete walked immediately almost congratulating the opposition for a job well done. Two balls later the incoming Jon Allen lost his wicket to ‘leg before’ and we were 11 for 3 off 5 overs! Not a good start!!
However better was to come. Tim Catley who came in after Palmer lost his wicket and Ed Fletcher who followed Jon Allen’s dismissal, started a comeback. For the next 22 overs they looked solid and slowly set about repairing the carnage of the first 5 overs. Tim was eventually given out by a very dubious LBW decision when the score was 95 and he was on 21. Just two overs later, Ed who had dominated the partnership and scored 57 off 77, was caught in the deep off Timothy Taylor. Murty, who had come in at the fall of Tim Catley, was giving a demonstration of how to hit and run and keep the opposition on their toes. This continued for the next ten overs or so before he fell to a catch behind, having scored 19 off 29. He was ably assisted by Tom Heywood (17 off 30), and Jamie Allen (12 off 20) and, Mr Bowman who scored 24 off 26 (including the only “six” of the match), in an amazing innings. (There was an earlier 6 recorded but this was due to overthrows.)
There was a moment during this late challenge that we thought we were in with a chance but it wasn’t to be. “WWWW”. (Worthington Were Worthy Winners).
