Match report
A memorable game
for lots of reasons but mainly because of three outstanding contributions. The first was Jon Allen who carried his bat through the entire innings and was eventually not-out for 101 off 135 balls. He now has a hatrick of 1st class hundreds and if he keeps batting like this he will soon have many more. The first over was a maiden then the ball was handed to the young South African bowler, Gerard Coetzee. His run up was at least 25 yards and the keeper was an equal amount back behind the stumps. Needless to say he was a bit sharpish. Jon hit his first over for 13 finishing with a single. The next over, bowled by Sam Hall went for 14 and two wides, all by Jon. After 3 overs, Jon was on 27 and Worthy hadn’t yet scored. And so it went on. Worthy was eventually out for 25 and Tim Catley 52 off 71 balls. There was a near disaster in the 49th over when, with his brother Jamie up the other end, Jon still needed 6, with 9 balls left, for his century. It was difficult to see exactly what happened but Jon swung the bat at an innocuous ball only to drop to the ground like a stone. Eventually he recovered his composure and finished the over on 95, one over to go and he was on strike. First ball was a dot and he hit the second for 1! Jamie is now on strike. He hits the next ball for a single thanks to a mis-field and puts Jon back on strike. Three balls left. The next goes for 4 and the century is achieved. The final score was 253 for 6 off 50 overs with Jon unbeaten on 101.
The next two contributions were bowling. Firstly Heskey (Tom Heywood) who finished with 4 for 8 off 6.5 overs at an economy rate of 1.17. The first two wickets, one to Heskey and one to Jamie fell in the first 3 overs but then Toby Wright and Robert Taylor steadied the boat and saw off the next 15 overs comfortably but got well behind the required rate. After 17 overs they were 59 for 2 where we were 98 for 1. Then the captain threw the ball to Mo who, with the 6th ball of his first over, had Toby Wright caught by Worthy. In his next over, again with the last ball, he had Taylor caught by Ben Palmer at mid-on. Now they were 65 for 4 and on the slide. A few overs later Jack Bowman had Coetzee caught by Mo and his second wicket was Tuck, caught behind for 18. Mo got another wicket in the 37th over and Heskey cleared up with 3 wickets in his last 2 overs. MCC were winners by 127 runs and now have 4 wins under their belt already having scored only 5 in the whole of last season. Well done chaps; now let’s keep it up.
Man of the match? I’ll leave it up to you but I know who I would choose!
