Match report
Just for a change I shall start at the end and work backwards. First and foremost, this was a great game for both players and spectators alike. No animosity on display, a sporting contest from start to finish. It’s not uncommon when two local teams take up arms to do battle, that the occasion can get to players and the game is overcome by unseemly behaviour. But not to day; both sides were desperate to win but not at all costs and in the end it was the home side that took the honours. Naturally there was an outcry of relief and delight from the home team and spectators but also respect for the opponents.
Mildenhall won the toss and opted to bat. Joe was quickly out, adjudged LBW and in came Worthy. He and Connor batted from the 4th to the 24th over, before Worthy was caught off Downey for 38 from 85. We were 141 for 2 and Tom Allen entered the fray and he and Connor took the score to 199 before Tom was bowled in the 45th over for 23 from 33. Connor lasted another couple of overs before being adjudged LBW in the 47th over having scored 109 off 151 balls. We finished with a quite reasonable total of 224 for 7.
After tea, Graham Ford and Arthur Summers opened for the home side and in his first over, Heskey clean bowled Summers. Was this the portent of things to come we wondered?. Unfortunately, it wasn't! Our next wicket took until the 20th over by which time Murty was bowling with Jack Bowman fielding in his normal suicidal position at short leg. Somehow, he got his fingers to an attempted heave for 6 by Tim Taylor and hung on to it. He celebrated by doing a war dance - I think I’d have done the same had it been me.
Wickets were not easy to find and Worlington slowly batted their way up to the required total and, with 3 overs to go and 5 wickets in hand they looked a certainty but they were getting visibly nervous. It’s a shame that the match wasn’t being filmed because the last 3 overs would have made for wonderful viewing, but now they are lost for ever. In the 48th over Graham Ford who had carried his bat through the entire innings so far, lobbed a dolly to Joe Reed. In the next over, Heskey got his second wicket, bowling Fletcher for 1 and in the next over , Bowman induced Sean Cooper to hit one to the boundary where Worthy was handy to catch it. Three balls left and they needed 3 more runs. Unfortunately, they held their nerve and knocked them off with the last two balls.
MOTM? There are two candidates, Ben Cross with a marvellous spell of bowling during the closing overs with 1 for 8 off 5 overs and had he been able to bowl more overs we might have done it. But when all’s said and done, if it wasn’t for a magnificent innings of 109 off 151, there wouldn’t have been much of a match so “Well done Connor”. Hope your Grandma reads this!
