MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat v East Bergholt CC 1st X1 on Sat 11 Jul 2026 at 12.00 noon
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 4 runs

Match report Our President and his wife were at the ground to witness this amazing game of cricket. It was a shame that it wasn’t recorded on camera because now it will disappear into the annals of statistics, as just a normal, run-of-the-mill league match, belied of any interest other than to its participants. On the contrary, this was no ordinary game of cricket. It was full of highs and lows, twists and turns and should have had a far bigger audience. Such is life! Perhaps the East Bergholt CC won’t go along with all this but tough s***! They lost, what would you expect!
The President suggested to me that it would be nice to see a report of the game on the website. I suspect that this suggestion was probably more of a subtle ‘demand’ so here goes.
Mildenhall won the toss and opted to bat. In the first over, Ben and Joe garnered 12 runs, both getting their first boundaries. Joe continued batting in his usual way, trying to hit every ball to the boundary, while Ben looked in control and played each ball on it’s merits. Joe was bowled in the 4th over, for 14 off 12. In came Tim Catley who lasted only 3 balls and was caught for “0”. Freddie Bowser was next to go in the following over for “0” and Harry Grant followed him in the 7th over for yet another “0”. From 33 for 1 in the 4th over, we were now 44 for 4 in the 8th over, and hanging on a thread. Next came “Murty” who can usually be relied upon to steady the ship and score some runs, but he too succumbed to the bowling onslaught and was Toohey’s 4th wicket, scoring 6. 44 for 4 became 68 for 5 by the 11th over. However, while all this was going on, Ben was busily moving the score along on his own, seemingly stroking 4’s all round the field. With the score on 106 he was caught behind, having scored 53 off 50 including 8 fours and 1 six. An excellent score under the circumstances and, as it transpired, a vital one. After that , Jamie, Jack and Aditya all made double figures (just!) and the innings closed at 130. A disappointing total but not surprising due to the middle order collapse.
East Bergholt must have been delighted to have such a low score to win and claim maximum points but maybe this contributed to their eventual demise. They would have been rubbing their hands with glee after the first over from “Crossy” which contained 4 wides and the next from Aditya from which they hit two ‘fours’ and one ‘six’. The next over from Ben included 4 more wides and 5 runs. The fourth over from Aditya went for a mere 3 runs, so after 4 overs they were 33 for no wicket having scored only 25. At this point the skipper, very wisely, put his arm round Crossy and said “ hard luck, mate, have a rest now and I’ll bring you back for a spell later” or words to that effect!
In the 5th over, East Bergholt’s delight at the way things were going took a dramatic reversal. The brilliant decision to bring Murty on, earlier than usual, had immediate effect. With his first ball, he bowled Wilf Harris. James Baker entered the fray and was caught behind with the next ball. In came Adam Blemimgs who survived the next 4 balls without scoring. At the end of the over they were 34 for 2 off 5. And things didn’t get much better after that either. Murty continued bowling to complete his allocation and finished with figures of 10 overs, 7 maidens, 5 wickets for 5 runs. Not content with these figures, he was severely angry with the umpire for not agreeing with his LBW verdict which, he (Murty) rather over contested, was plumb. It looked plumb from the scorebox I must say!
This all rather overshadowed Jack Bowman’s contribution to the game which was not insubstantial, taking 4 for 26 off 6.3 overs.
To finish off, Crossy came back on for another 5 overs, bowling only 2 wides and clean bowling Ben McGrath.
So, in the end, a brilliant, but unexpected, win for the 2’s and an enjoyable game, exciting even, to watch.
Team effort. Well done!
Next week Clacton. YUK!
