MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 2 wickets

Match report On a dry and partly cloudy Saturday Mildenhall entertained top of the table team Copdock in a Two Counties Division One game.
The visitors batted first and James Holmes straight away picked up from where he had left off in the last home match by clean bowling both Jervis (4) and Sharpe (12) with just 28 on the board. Ben France and Chris Swallow took the score passed 50. Steve Lankester replaced Phangabantu at the Wamil Walk end and in his first over he had Swallow (11) driving on the up, straight to Jimmy Watson who took the catch. Captain Karl Holmes then introduced T (Thunderbolt) Mills to bowl at the River End and he took a wicket in his first over, as his sheer pace deceived new batsman Nel (0) into top edging a “Skyer” that was nicely taken by Ziaf Kulasi. Mills then claimed his second wicket when he bowled Thomas for 21 and Copdock had half their side back in the pavilion for 71.Mildenhall then their showed their darker side, in consecutive overs they put down straight forward catches from France and James East. The pair then began to build a partnership that brought up the 100. Mildenhall had by then turned to an all spin attack that alongside some sloppy outfielding began to leak runs. Holmes turned back to Phangabantu and Mills to restore some hold on the game. Mills put in an incredible over that firstly saw him trap France lbw for 39 and then next ball clean bowl Jenkin for a duck. His next ball to Raj struck the pads but Mills loud lbw appeal did not impress the umpire. This was to be Mildenhall's last bowling success as James East and Raj added 66 runs in an aggressive partnership that saw the home losing their composure both with their bowling and fielding. This culminated with Phangabantu having been “No Balled “ hurling the ball back down the wicket, and it flashed passed the keeper for 4 overthrows. Copdock ended their innings on 199. Tymal Mills was the pick of the bowling with 4 for 34 in 10 overs.

Mildenhall’s openers made a steady start adding 40 before Richard Cross played across one from James East and was bowled for 15. Swallow came on to bowl and first ball Alex Reynolds played well forward but was adjudged lbw for 23. Mildenhall then began to falter as Jimmy Watson was caught having made just 5 and James Holmes played on to be dismissed for 0. Ben Shepperson was next out caught off Swallow for 16 and Mildenhall had been reduced to 80 for 5. Steve Lankester back in the side after a holiday showed his usual aggression as he Ziaf Kulasi added 40 before Lankester (22) was out lbw to Swallow. Karl Holmes came in and spurred on by Kulasi’s big hitting the pair compiled 43 more runs before Holmes (15) was given out lbw to France. Adam White met the same fate first ball and Mildenhall were 37 runs short with just 2 wickets in hand. This was the day however when Kulasi was not going to allow the opposition contain him. He peppered the boundary ropes in a controlled inning. He and Phangabantu saw the partnership arrive at the last over requiring 4 runs to win. They scampered runs to leave 1 run needed with 2 balls to bowl. Phangabantu eased both his teams and the home spectators’ nerves as he pulled the ball for a boundary and the home side were winners by 2 wickets. Phangabantu was 16* and man of match Kulasi had made a seasons best of 87*. Mildenhall were able to take some consolation on missing out on honours by taking the scalp of the impending Champions of their league.
