Match report On a glorious Mid-Summer like day on Saturday, Mildenhall 1st X1 took to the field in their last match of the 2009 season. However much like our summers can disappear very quickly so did this game. Mildenhalls opponents were Woodbridge who are doomed to relegation this year. They arrived in Mildenhall with a depleted side and having won the toss elected to bat.

Mildenhall soon separated the opening partnership. Woodbridge had 5 on the board when James Holmes clattered Barham’s stumps with an inswinger. Phangabantu with his pace and Holmes with sideways movement tested the batsmens resolve. Phangabantu knocked over Akers wicket only for the umpire to signal “No Ball”. Parker showed some resolve but with the score on 30 Phangabantu cleaned bowled Akers for 12 Then it was Holmes turn to be disappointed when Richard Cross spilled a catch in the gully. Holmes was rewarded 2 overs later when he bowled the uncomfortable looking Foreman for 4. Captain Karl Holmes made a double bowling change as he brought on Steve Lankester and Tymal Mills. Mills sheer pace was too good for Rusby (7) he departed having been clean bowled by Mills after just 3 balls. 55 for 4 became 59 for 5 when opener Parker stepped sideway to pull Lankester, missed and was bowled. Woodbridge’s innings had an air of desperation about it and Mildenhalls body language suggested they did not feel they were in much of a contest. Jimmy Watson replaced Mills and he bowled Deering for 8.Lankester having been the recipient of Woodbridge’s last resistance when he was hit for 6, immediately struck back, the very next ball he induced Oswald to top edge a catch to Ziaf Kulasi. Lankester then repeated this dismissal when Rayner attempted the same shot and Jason Moore held a second top edged catch. Watson wrapped things up when Tyler drove on the up straight to James Holmes at mid off which to a round of applause from his team mates duly took the catch. Woodbridge’s ten men had been bowled out for 98.

Mildenhall have struggled with their opening partnerships all season, so there was some kind of inevitability that this last match might resolve the problem. Richard Cross (42*) and Alex Reynolds (52*) put together an unbroken stand of 99, by far the best of the season. This gave Mildenhall a 10-wicket victory at the early time of 4.15pm. Mildenhall having finished with a flourish just failed to pip near neighbours Exning for Runners Up spot.in the Division One of the Two Counties League.
