Match report Mildenhall Cricket Club match reports for August 9th
Mildenhall 1st X1 travelled the short distance to Lakenheath for their Two Counties Division One game on Saturday. The Lakenheath clubs ground staff did a remarkable job in keeping the wicket dry after the torrential overnight rain and play got underway on time. Mildenhall batted first and Alex Reynolds and Joe Reed added 33 before Reynolds (15) edged a ball to the slip cauldron and was caught by Shane Leech off Sam Bowers. Kobus Scholtz went in at number 3 and struggled with his timing and what proved costly for Lakenheath, he was dropped on nought. Scholtz and Reed moved the score along to 49 and then Reed (19) played forward to Tim Milner and was adjudged LBW. Ben Shepperson and Sholtz added a quick 28 before Shepperson (11) feathered a catch to wicketkeeper Andy Leech for Milner to get his second wicket. Mildenhall reached a 100 in the 22nd over before Adam Trett (9) offered a simple catch to Greg Palmer off part time bowler Robbie Horrex. Ryan Clark and Scholtz were able to take advantage of the makeshift bowling. The pair put on 51 before another simple catch saw Clark (19) caught at mid-wicket by Shane Leech off Palmer. Scholtz reached another half century and then got a third life when Tim Milner failed to hang onto a catch at extra cover. This led to more punishment for the Lakenheath bowlers as Scholtz had by now found his timing and he and Jack Beaumont added a further 51 and brought up the 200 for the visitors. Scholtz was poised to reach a century however his lofted drive to long on saw Shane Leech hang on to his third catch and Scholtz was out for 97. His partner Beaumont (19) fell soon after, top edging a ball from Milner that captain Greg Palmer claimed safely. Mildenhall gifted points to the home side as Karl Holmes (6) pulled across the line and was bowled by Palmer and Tom Allen (1) was needlessly run out. Duncan Fraser (14*) came in as last man and hit a couple of lusty blows that allowed Mildenhall to close on 231 for 9.
In reply Lakenheath introduced the “whirlwind” that is Jamaican Jordan Joseph. Mildenhalls game plan of a 7/2 field looked way of the mark as Jordan raced to 24 hitting 3 leg side boundaries. The away team held their nerve and Tom Allen duly bowled Joseph in the 5th over. This brought to the crease Ellis Frith and together with Shane Leech the untroubled pair took the score to 100 at the halfway stage. Drinks proved fateful as just three balls later Frith (26) drove Reed low and hard to cover where Ben Shepperson hung on to a good catch. Then with just 4 more runs Scholtz deceived Leech (47) who gave a simple top edge to Holmes. Scholtz got a second wicket on the same score when he trapped Liam Flack lbw for nought. Tim Milner and Horrex fought back adding 38 in just over 6 overs. Tim Milner (23) was next to go when he edged a catch to Holmes off Reed. Mark Milner swept a couple of boundaries as the home team passed 150 and still on course for a surprise win. Mildenhall re introduced Jack Beaumont and this proved decisive. Milner (12) drove him high to the deep and was caught by Scholtz. Lakenheaths collapse had begun. They lost their last 5 wickets for 13 runs. Good out fielding and a smart stumping assisted the demise of Lakenheath, as they were all out for 177. Beaumont finished with 3 for 25. Joe Reed took 2 for 31 and man of the match Scholtz claimed 4 for 61. Mildenhall claimed maximum points and probably condemned their opponent to relegation.
