MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Frinton on Sea on Sat 16 Aug 2014 at 1.00p.m.
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Mildenhall lost by 6 wickets
Match report
On Saturday on a greenish pitch at Wamil Way, Mildenhall 1stX1 were asked to bat first in their match against top of the table Frinton. Ryan Clark took on the responsibility of opening for his club after the delayed arrival of regular opener Joe Reed. His opening partner Alex Reynolds lasted just one ball after he edged a catch to wicket keeper Craig Perrin off Mervyn Westfield. Kobus Scholtz (5) went in at number 3 and against the best opening attack to play at Mildenhall this season he soon decided that attack rather than defence was the best policy and went aerial on a couple of occasions however his third attempt off Michael Armstrong saw Lewis Catlow turn from his deep gully position run towards the boundary he then dived forward to take a superb catch. Joe Reed lasted 5 minutes, struck one boundary and then was adjudged lbw to Westfield leaving Mildenhall on 16 for 3. Captain Ben Shepperson joined Clark and they worked hard against some hostile bowling. Justin Greaves replaced Armstrong and he proved to be quicker than either of the two opening bowler. The home pair fought their way past 50 and Clark in particular was starting to time the ball well. Then with 2 balls to go to drinks Greaves deceived Clark (37) who fell edging to Daniel Carter in the slips with the score on 82.The break broke Sheppersons concentration and in the resuming over he went for an expansive drive and was caught at deepish mid-on by Westfield off Carter and was out for 17. Mildenhall then stumbled along at 2 an over as Frinton turned to a slow attack that saw Adam Trett (8), Jack Beaumont (9) and Tom Allen (6) all out offering wicketkeeper Perrin catches off Catlow. Luke Turner (3) fared no better offering a simple caught and bowled chance to Trevor Moulton. Mildenhall were finally dismissed for 118 when Duncan Fraser was run out for 2. Mildenhall had also gifted an extra 9 overs batting to the opposition.
Mildenhall never looked like a beaten team and Shepperson worked hard,he rotated his bowlers in an attempt to make something happen. Moulton and Perrin stuck in however and had added 53 before Beaumont introduction saw Perrin trapped lbw for 17. In his next over Beaumont induced Moulton (35) to offer Clark a catch at the wicket. Then in his third over Beaumont dismissed Greaves (5) who played the ball straight into the hands of Reed at extra cover leaving Frinton on 68 for 3. This brought together the Essex county experience of Ben Foakes and Westfield. Jamie Allen had a good shout against Foakes but got a negative response from the umpire. Westfield soon got into his stride and struck the ball powerfully. He made 25 in just 29 balls before lofting a catch to Ben Shepperson with the score on 94. This gave Beaumont his fourth wicket. J Hambrook joined Foakes and they had no more scares as they took the score passed Mildenhalls in the 34th over. For Mildenhall Beaumont finished with 4 for 45.
