Swardeston v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 22 Aug 2020 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Won By 137 runs
Match report
I was looking forward to today’s game. We’ve had some good results against Swardeston over the past 3 years and some not so good ones. Unfortunately, this was going to be one of the latter. And so the day went downhill from hereon!
On arrival I was told I had to sit in the sun under the cover of a very flimsy pagoda which threatened to blow away whenever the wind got up to over 5 mph which was frequently. As well as this if you have tried to read a computer screen with the sun blaring down on you, you will appreciate my difficulty. Also, Swardeston, for reasons known only to themselves steadfastly refuse to toe the line and score their matches on an outdated system which is not compatible with Playcricket! So, I am asked to be the live scorer but I am not allowed to use their broadband! In addition the cellnet signal is so week that I can’t tether my laptop to that either. Thankfully I have a piece of paper and a pencil with me and record the entire match on that and when I get home spend an hour entering the day’s match, ball by ball. Twitter was of course a no no!
So, what about the cricket then I hear you ask. Indeed! What about it? To be fair to us the unfortunate but enforced absence of Ollie and Jake due to Covid-19 regulations did not help our cause but the way I saw it was we were beaten by a side who have 4 batsmen, two or more of whom regularly make good scores, and a mediocre bowling attack. According to their scorer it was much the same the previous week when Cambridge chased down 312 runs with overs to spare. And Michael Pepper wasn’t playing! Potts needs 2 or 3 others to stay with him, he can’t do it all on his own every week. Josh Frame, diminutive maybe in stature but not in courage, looked good for his 27 runs from 41 balls and Tom Allen also contributes to the score most weeks. Tristan too nearly always contributes but these are not enough. We need some more semi-centurions or better.
Next week we are at Great Witchingham, where, if I recall correctly, the scoreboard is on the other side of the ground to the pavilion. I am mentioning this so that when you come out to bat you present your number in my general direction. :)
