MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Horsford on Sat 12 Sep 2020 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 5 wickets
Match report
THE DOM COMES TO TOWN.
This was a game which could have gone either way but was eventually won by the better side due to performances by some previously underachievers.
Having spoken to the team spokesman prior to the game about the decision to put the opponents in I was told that as the wicket was a bit green, the ball was expected to move about a bit. From where I was sitting I couldn’t see if it was moving about but the wickets weren’t falling particularly fast. However the bowling was obviously tight as the batsmen weren’t scoring very quickly either and it wasn’t until the 23rd over that they managed more than 2 scoring strokes in the over. The first wicket fell quickly, LBW to Crooky in the third over. Ethan Metcalf came in and was playing quite nicely until the 17th over when he was run out whilst backing up. Oscar Binney hit a glorious drive back to Jake the bowler who stuck his hand out and deflected the ball on to the wicket leaving Metcalf yards out of his crease. I don’t know whether this was intentional or lucky but either way he was out which made up for his being dropped three overs earlier. Meanwhile Jake was seen walking about shaking his hand furiously! After this Horsford managed to up the run rate to around 4 an over where it stayed until the end of their innings when they had scored 197. All six bowlers got a wicket except Lovers who got his usual 3.
Mildenhall’s innings started cautiously until the 4th over when The DOM stroked the ball to the boundary which exacted a large cheer from his team members. This sparked both Tom and The DOM and the run rate quickly shot up to about 5 an over. When Tom was out in the 9th over the partnership stood at 41. In came BAKER who was equally inspired and when he was eventually out in the 28th over he had scored 41 off 51 balls and shared a partnership with The Dom of 108 off 121 balls. This was what we had waited for and even more great things were expected on the arrival of Potts to the wicket. Unfortunately, The DOM was stumped after 4 more overs having scored 70 well deserved runs although it could so easily have been more. All of a sudden 2 more wickets fell in a flurry which I will gloss over leaving Ollie and Tom Allen to escort us over the winning line, which, incidentally had been increased to 209 because of our slow over rate in the first innings!
To the literary amongst you I urge you to listen to Danny Kaye singing the Ugly Duckling based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson. You can find it on Apple Music or other music libraries.
