MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Saffron Walden CC 1st XI on Sat 03 Jul 2021 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 4 wickets
Match report
It’s a well known fact that two swallows do not a summer make, but two wins in a row means we are on a streak!
After an early breakthrough by our front-line bowlers Rashy and Trish, (I’m sure there’s a spoonerism here somewhere!) nothing much else was happening. A few runs here and there, the odd wicket now and then but what was annoying was that a certain Mr Gorantla who is a diminutive fellow but with, no doubt, a big heart, became a severe thorn in our sides. To be fair it was a splendid innings without a chance and might have gone on for 64 overs had not Loveday stepped up. Having fielded for 47 overs he must have thought that Ollie had forgotten he was playing. He was dispatched to the boundary twice by Gorontla in his first over and probably wondered if he should go back to fielding. However, Jack is nothing if not persistent and a bit sharpish to boot, and in the blink of an eye, had the wickets of both Garantla who misread the speed of the ball and skied a catch to Baker somewhere near the boundary and Hancock under his belt. This was a great breakthrough by Luvvers because they were using up too many overs. We had to wait another 8 overs before Ormsby tried to scoop Jack’s second ball over the slips but failed so he tried again with his next ball, this time successfully straight into the waiting hands of Ollie. Job done all out for 221. A good score but not unbeatable. Without waiting for the usual congratulations, Jack strode off the field purposefully, indicating to the skipper that had he put him on earlier it might have saved him a lot of trouble! Who knows?
Our innings got off to a bad start when Potts clipped his second ball to gully which heralded the arrival of Baker. In the eight over by which time we had 34 on the board, Darren edged the ball to first slip. This was not what we wanted but the Lord works in mysterious ways. In went Nic and together with Baker, they consumed the bowling prodigiously, batting right through tea and up to the 34th over when Matt finally snicked one to the wicketkeeper. By this time both Matt and Nic had completed their 50’s and with 145 on the board we were well on the way. This was a great innings by Matt who had come to the crease in the first over and who proved that not only can he bowl a bit, he can bat as well. If only he believed in himself a bit more.
Then came the inevitable slippery slope MCC losing 3 more wickets in the space of 8 overs for the addition of 25 runs. Here we go again we thought. But what do you need in the event of a near catastrophe. You need a cool head and a straight bat and Tristan has both in quantities. He and the excellent Nic saw the match through and we scored the necessary runs in 8 overs with no further mishaps. Nic finished on 96 and it was a shame in a way that Saffron Walden hadn’t scored a few more as he would without doubt have scored his first century for Mildenhall. An innings of maturity without giving a chance. All in all a great team performance. Well done. Now for three in a row!
PS Late addition. It occurred to me that I never give credit to our excellent keeper Mr Potticary. He may not have got many runs today but week after week he is responsible for three or four wickets at least. Yes I know he's the bloody wicketkeeper so he's supposed to take lots of catches but even so I can't recall him missing much if anything this season. Tell me if I'm wrong if you dare!
