Sawston and Babraham CC 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost by 91 runs
Match report
If you haven’t played at Sawston & Babraham CC before allow me to introduce you to the scene. A picturesque ground with good, modern facilities, situated in a lovely hamlet of Cambridgeshire not many miles from the city. Well worth a visit.
The match.
We lost the toss and were asked to bowl. Mildenhall probably would have preferred to bat first but nevertheless must have been quite happy at how things were going. Tristan was first to shine taking 3 wickets for 17 in his first 6 overs but none for Rashy in his first spell although he had only conceded 8 runs in 7 overs. This was good bowling by both and then Matt came on. After he had got his act together he induced Patel to give a catch to Peter. With 52 overs gone, Sawston were 140 for 9 and things were looking sweet for Mildenhall. Unfortunately Alexander Stafford, who had come in at no. 8 upped his run rate and whacked, and I use the word wisely, the ball all over the place, putting on another 50 odd runs until he ran out of partners. Still, 196 to win was more than gettable one would have thought.
Our innings started disastrously losing Darren, Jon and Jack P in the third, fourth and fifth overs, Nic in the seventh, Ollie in the tenth and Rashy in the eleventh. However we were ahead of the run chase with 25 runs scored as opposed to Sawston’s total of 19 at the same point! This was humiliation, utter humiliation. Two ladies who turned up to watch at this moment in time called across to check the score as they thought there was a mistake on the scoreboard! The game was as good as dead and although the remaining batsmen, Tom with 23 off 94, Matt with 23 off 53 and Peter with 19 off 24, did what they could but there was no way back for Mildenhall and we finally succumbed all out for 105 off 42 overs. I asked a wise Mildenhall member who had watched the match what he thought was the cause and he replied “there were a few strange shots played out there!” and we left it at that.
Credits? Certainly in the bowling department. Rashy with 5 for 33 off 17 and Tris 4 for 49 off 15 excelled. Batting department. Forget it. In fact that’s the best thing to do about this match. Forget it and move on.
