MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Sawston and Babraham CC 1st XI on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 7 wickets

Match report Well, well, well! It just goes to show what a few honest and critical words can do to shake up the spirits. This was a well won victory over a team who have quality in depth but appear not to have grasped the art of winning the long game. With three draws and now a convincing defeat, a second successive championship may be beyond Sawston & Babraham CC after all.
Darren won the toss and put them in. Opener Charlie Lewis was quickly back in the pavilion, caught by Potts off the bowling of Tristan Blackledge. Tris went on to bowl 12 overs off the bounce and was also rewarded with the wicket of Dan Heath in the 17th over, caught smartly by Tom Allen in the slips when the score was 59 for 3. Earlier Jack Loveday had Luke Spears caught by Tris for a score of 25 off 27 balls. That was another threatening batsman nipped in the bud before he had done too much damage. Callum Guest however was made of sterner stuff and would probably have carried his bat through the innings had not Joe Tetley smartly run him out in the 55th over for 84 off 126 balls. Because of a small delay for rain the match was reduced to 108 overs which meant that Sawston could receive 58 overs at which point they were 229 for 9. Not a huge score considering their strength and one which was well gettable If we could concentrate. Wicket takers were 2 each for Rashy, Tris and Naveen and 1 each for Luvvers and Baker. Overall, pretty good bowling by all.
So, what would Mildenhall make in reply? First ball from Mark Smith was swatted by Potts for 4 in much the same manner as he was constantly doing last summer. In the 4th over, three more were hit before the dreaded finger went up after an appeal for Lb. Potts didn’t look too happy about it but walked immediately so the game was probably deprived off another virtuoso performance. Olly came in to accompany Darren but soon after Ben Clilverd had Olly caught. However, Darren was starting to look a lot more confident in his batting than of late but only lasted until the 13th over before he was caught in the slips bringing in Tom Rash. The signs were ominous! But we were well ahead on the run rate so all was not lost. Both Joe and Tom thought the same and carried their bats through to the end magnificently. Between them they scored the necessary 148 runs in 28 overs including 24 boundaries, the main highlight being Joe’s maiden century for Mildenhall CC.
Next week Sawston are not playing so if we can repeat this sort of performance we could be up in the clouds with them.
Statistics: Sawston’s 229 took them 58 overs; Mildenhall took 42 overs to score 230.
