Swardeston CC 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 25 Jun 2022 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 7 wickets
Match report
The Pete & Joe Show
It seems that the England team directive under the new coach has seeped down to grass roots level. Last week Mildenhall 1sts pummeled Sawston & Babraham to a pulp and today it was the turn of Swardeston to be battered. Admittedly, Swardeston are not the side they were a few years ago but let’s not be picky, this was an annihilation, there’s no other word for it. Even Norman, their scorer, was impressed!
Mildenhall won the toss and put Swardeston in. The first wicket fell in the second over when Tris had Chapman caught behind. Rashy got the next 2 in the 7th and 12th overs and then Luvvers got his first in the 17th over having been hit for a few boundaries in his first 3 overs which clearly displeased him. Rashy got another in the next over and Luvvers followed with another next over. So, from 89 for 3 in the 16th over, Swardeston were now 103 for 6 in the nineteenth and in a mess. At this point, Naveen entered the fray and although no more wickets fell for 10 overs the run rate was seriously curtailed. Finally Naveen trapped Denmark lbw in the 30th over, bowled Todd in the 38th and had Mark Thomas lbw in the 42nd over thanks to some aggressive appealing from Baker at point! Rashy wrapped it up having Barker caught by Joe Tetley in the 45th over. Top bowler was Rashy with 4 for 33 off 11 overs. With only 182 on the board a win for Mildenhall looked a formality.
Darren Ironside was unavailable for this match so Peter Worthington accompanied Potts to the wicket and took up the non-striker position. Jack saw the first over out without scoring so Peter faced the first ball of the second over. Like a man possessed, he dispatched the first three balls to the boundary, including one maximum and with a no-ball as well the score after two overs was 16 for 0. Jack now joined in the fray and hit 2 fours in the next over Then Pete also hit the last three balls of the fourth over to the boundary. The score was now 36 for 0. The next four overs went for 7, 4, 6 and 8 before Jack missed one from Rajaguru and was bowled. The score was 61 for 1 off 8 overs. Olly came in for a couple of overs before being caught at slip off Rajaguru. Enter Joe Tetley from stage left. Pete and Joe then put on a show and laid siege to the Swardeston bowling, both running between the wickets like teenagers and hitting boundaries at will. In the 23rd over Pete holed out to Todd on the midwicket boundary, having scored 81 off 59 balls. It was left to Tris, captain for the day, to accompany Joe to seal the win with oceans of overs to spare. Joe finished with 65 off 46 balls.
The only thing left was to decide on the man of the match. I can’t make up my mind so I will leave it to the captain, Tristan.
PS. Could we make it a hattrick of wins and batter Copdock next week? Watch this space!
