MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Witham CC 1st XI on Sat 23 Jul 2022 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost by 6 runs

Match report Witham won the toss and decided to bat on a nice, comfortably warm day. Rashy opened the bowling for Mildenhall, and Huntington was adjudged lbw second ball. In the third ball of his second over, Rashy had Facey lbw as well. A succession of maidens apart from a couple of fours and singles and Tris clean bowled Nyaku in the tenth over. 16 for 3! Two overs later Rashy had the captain, Wakelin caught behind. And in his second over Luvvers clean bowled McDonald and Hawes. In the next over Rashy had Garrard lbw. In the fourteenth over Witham were 25 for 7 after 55 minutes play and in a mess. I was thinking “knock the tail over” score a few runs before lunch, get the rest after lunch and go home. I even rang the missus to say I’d be home early, to book dinner at a restaurant and we could go out. Talk about tempting fate!! Whilst all this was going on, Michael Godwin was at the other end, not scoring a lot (he’d only scored 9 at the fall of the 7th wicket) but keeping his wicket intact and refusing to hit the ball with his legs. With three LBW decisions already one had to be very careful!

Hamad Arshad now entered the fray and together with Godwin negotiated ,the next 14 overs, not scoring too many, before Naveen at last bowled Godwin who had scored 23 runs in 76 balls in 112 minutes. As it turned out this was a very important innings despite the low score slowly frustrating the Mildenhall bowlers by his obduracy. The score was now 54 for 8 after 28 overs, the end was in sight or so we thought! Carl Bragg came and decided he too would knuckle down and together with Arshad they saw off the next 14 overs slowly increasing the score. Lunch was taken after which Arshad and Bragg carried on from where they left off. When Arshad was eventually out, caught by Baker off Naveen, you could feel the tension lift. It was the 42nd over and only 91 was on the board. Bragg and Stephens had other ideas of course and negotiated the next 12 overs, scoring another 46 runs before Stephens was finally bowled by Naveen having scored 35 runs in 36 balls. The final score was 137 and it was five to three. I was getting nervous about having rung the missus but surely it wouldn’t take our boys long to knock this score off!!

Mildenhall’s innings started just after 3pm. Peter was out very quickly but Darren and Olly took their time and saw off the next 11 overs scoring 56 runs before Darren was out LBW trying to sweep Jake Wakelin. Jake and Greg Stephens had both joined the attack from the 10th over and bowled the next 34 overs in harness causing havoc. Wickets fell regularly as the score went from 56 for 2 when Olly was out to 98 for 8 in the 36th over. But still we believed. Rashy and Luvvers were now together and were batting sensibly especially Jack who was not trying to hit boundaries off every ball. The score went from 98 to 129 when Jake Wakelin, with almost his last permitted ball bowled Luvvers. In came Naveen and had he not taken a single off the last ball of the 46th over, Rashy would probably seen us home. But it wasn’t to be and, needless to say, nor was my diiner!
An amazing game and one must give full credit to Witham. Considering their lowly league position they exceeded expectation and made amends for their loss in our earlier fixture. Well done them and another home defeat for us.
