MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost by 17 runs

Match report MCC v Sawston & Babraham CC
Well, we lived the dream but failed at the last hurdle. We will finish second which will be our best performance in the EAPL to date so we haven’t had a bad season, it just could have been a little better. And if we cast our minds back to some of the bad losses we suffered at Wamil Way we will know what not to do next season.
Sawston won the toss and elected to bat. They batted sensibly keeping their wickets intact and by the 30th over when they lost their second wicket they had only scored 140. After 40 overs they had scored 189 for the loss of only 4 wickets. Then they started to up the run rate and naturally wickets started to tumble and after 49 overs and 5 balls they were all out for 261. Not a massive total, one that Mildenhall were quite capable of beating.
Unfortunately we lost our first 4 wickets inside 12 overs for only 52 runs and were then clearly on the back foot. However, an excellent innings from Joe Tetley, ably assisted by the skipper Tristan took us to 185 in the 33rd over without further loss. Then both were adjudged LBW in consecutive overs just as we were thinking “we can do this”. Matt and Rashy tried to pick up the pace but Sawston were in full cry by now and the fall of every wicket was greeted with thunderous cheers from a considerable number of Sawston supporters. We were finally all out 18 runs short.
At the end of the day the better side won and the game was conducted in a sporting manner. It was good to see Tris lead his team and congratulate our new champions. Now all we need to do is dry our tears, kick the s*** out of Swardeston next week and then look forward to next season when we shall win!
