Match report
After recent results, this was a very disappointing result and after due deliberation, fully deserved.
We won the toss and elected to field. The reason for this, presumably, was because we knew we would not be able to bowl the opposition out so took the alternative option to chase the runs. Based on our recent performances, this was probably the right decision, but it backfired badly.
Having been put in, SW set about their task quietly with just one boundary in the first 5 overs. Then Tris got one past Bonham, with his lovely orange boots, and SW were 16 for 1. In came Josh Down and he and Hari Kukreja upped the run rate slightly and put on 50 runs in 13 overs. Then Loveday came back for another over and immediately had Down caught by Tom Allen. Then Dom Palmer came on to bowl and in his first over got Kukreja lbw for his first wicket in the 1sts. 66 for 2. In the space of 2 overs, SW went from 66 for 1 to 72 for 3. Things were looking up for Mildenhall.
Unfortunately, it took another 18 overs and 52 runs to get our next wicket, that of Finn Karsten who was bowled by Palmer for 22. This was Dom’s second wicket of the innings. His figures were 2 for 66 off 15 at 4.4. A promising start maybe.
At this point SW were 128 for 4 after 38 overs and progressed this to 260 for 8 after 62 overs and 2 balls before rain stopped play. Well done Jonah who got his 2nd wicket for the 1sts. Pick of the bowlers was Loveday with 3 for 38 off 12.3.
The rain didn’t last long and was very light, so play was restarted after a short delay. SW had declared but we had only 51 overs to score the runs. A little more than 5 an over. Shouldn’t be too difficult.
Matt edged the first ball from Ashleigh Cox to the wicketkeeper. 0 for 1! In the 7th over, Cox who had been bowling quite beautifully, bowled a wide down the leg side and Ash edged it to the wicketkeeper. 24 for 2! 1st ball 8th over Worthy plays on. 3rd ball, same over, Olly hits 4 off his legs and 4th ball, is caught behind. “4 for 28 after 8 overs chasing 260!
Remarkably, Joe and Tris stayed together for the next 27 overs, but they were never going to get near the required target and Mildenhall were all out for 152 in the 41st over.
Just to be fair to our batsmen, Ashleigh Cox probably had his best ever bowling performance with 8 for 39 off 13.5 at 2.8 and, not surprisingly, is top of the bowling EAPL bowling stats. A crumb of comfort maybe.
