Match report
Mo makes his mark against Swardeston. Read on!
Well, I didn’t see that one coming! (Part 2)
We arrived at Swardeston with a depleted team expecting to get firmly beaten. This is no disrespect to the newboys in the team but after all’s said and done, our opponents are riding high and are expected to win the league.
Tris won the toss and opted to bat on the strip nearest the road. This was a little bit disconcerting as the scorebox was in range of a peppering from the Swardeston batsmen. But we needn’t have worried, they only hit 9 fours and 1 six. It was our boys who threatened us with 19 fours and 13 sixes. Yes, 13! This is by a country mile, the most sixes hit by MCC 1sts in a single EAPL match this season.
Darren and Matt opened. Adam Todd, their strike bowler, pulled up after 2 balls with a leg injury, and later left the field. He took no further part in the match. Thelwell took over and had Darren caught with the fifth ball of the over. Olly came in but was caught by Denmark in the 7th over for 16. In came Connor, who after his heroic innings for Suffolk 2’s earlier in the week, decided he would carry on where he left off. It wasn’t quite the same scenario but, nevertheless, he and Matt put on 83 before Matt was bowled by Callum Taylor for 78 off 38 balls. In one over off Mattew Taylor, Baker hit 3 sixes and 1 four! Another cameo from Baker. Connor was adjudged LBW next ball for 19. Will Blackwell and Tris took the score to 166 before Will was caught by Denmark for 11. Enter Tom Allen and he and Tris put on another 77 off 46 before Tris was bowled for 43 off 44. LDP made a brief appearance, as did Matt Heywood, but Tom carried on for a few more overs before being caught and bowled for an entertaining 52 off 38. Eventually we were all out for 265 in the 40th over, which included a generous contribution from our hosts, of 30 extras.
So what would Swardeston make of this total. Judging from previous results not a lot! Well, we were in for a big surprise. Like us, they lost their first wicket in the first over, Jordan Taylor adjudged LBW to LDP. Lewis Barker was next to go in the 8th over caught Olly, bowled by Tris. In the 13th over, Mo bowled Callum Taylor with a Shane Warne type delivery ( what a shame there were no cameras in action) and two overs later, had Saranga Rajaguru stumped. In the next over, Jonah bowled Chapman and in the distance we could hear the fat lady doing her warm up routine. A few overs later, the rest of the batsmen capitulated and Swardeston were all out for 107.
Our man of the match must be Muhammad Ubaid with 4 for 45 off 10 overs, which so easily could have been a “fifer” had a difficult catch in the deep been taken.
Well done all, an entertaining game with a just result and an all round good team effort. Next up are Sawston. Having beaten Swardeston, it would only be fair to do the same to Sawston, wouldn't it!
