Swardeston CC 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 20 Apr 2024 at 11.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 27 runs
Match report
Mildenhall 1st X1 opened their 2024 season with an away match at Swardeston. There was no sunshine land to welcome the new overseas player” KC” Cariappa when he was presented with his new cap by the clubs president Tony Cornell. The weather had a cold wind and overcast conditions prevailed, probably making it the coldest start since 1991 when snow fell during the MCC v Exning game.
Unsurprisingly Swardeston invited Mildenhall to bat first. Matt Allen and Jack Potticary opened the batting with the latter retuning to the team after a year’s absence. Potticary started aggressively but had an early let off when dropped in the deep. The pair survived and accumulated a partnership of 50 before Potticary (34) was trapped LBW by Callum Taylor. That brought in Darren Ironside who had endured a miserable 2023 with a leg injury. He settled quickly, however with just a further 11 runs added Allen (17) was caught behind, His effort had produced one six. Joe Tetley (8) and Olly Jefferies (9) both failed to get established as Callum Taylor claimed two more scalps. With the score on108 for4 and the halfway mark approaching Ironside was joined by captain Tristan Blackledge. With the ball holding up in the damp outfield, the pair adopted a quick single approach. This in turn caused a couple of near calls with run outs. They still punished the bad ball and together added 94. Blackledge was eventually out, caught behind for 46. Meanwhile Ironside moved passed 50 and looked in good form. In the pursuit of a run chase however Ironside (79) was caught attempting a lofty drive. The run chase carried on with KC Cariappa, Tom Allen and Connor Cobbold all caught in the deep. Jack Loveday however enabled Mildenhall to pass 250 as he added a not out 22. Mildenhall closed on 255 for 9 which was probably a parr score in the conditions. Best of the bowling for the home side was Callum Taylor who took 4 for. 44.
Mildenhall started well when the second ball bowled by Jack Loveday saw Joe Tetley taking a slip catch barely two inches off the ground and could well be a contender for catch of the season. Callum Taylor departed back to the pavilion for a duck. Alfie Cooper joined captain Jordan Taylor and the pair fought back strongly and added an aggressive 48. Blackledge seemed to struggle to find any rhythm. Loveday struck again to remove Jordan Taylor (19) who was struck on the pads and out LBW. Blackledge changed his attack and success followed as Jonah Handy picked up Alfie Cooper (35) with another LBW decision. Handy was soon in action again when he held on to outfield catch off the bowling of KC Cariappa, that saw the end of Benjamin Chapman. Mildenhall had pegged their opponents back to 75 for4. Any thoughts that this might be an easy win for the visitors was dispelled when middle order batsmen Saranga Rajaguru and Harry Barker added a further 50. This score was helped when Tetley dropped a lofted catch that could be a contender for miss of the season. Oh how cruel the game can be. Mildenhall rotated their bowlers again and Ironside broke through dismissing Barker LBW for 22. New batsman Matthew Taylor joined Rajaguru and turned the game towards the home team. Mildenhall were hampered in their bowling when Blackledge conceding no balls and finding no consistency had to be removed from the attack. Unphased however the captain kept his cool and cleverly rotated his other bowlers. With the score on 196 Cariappa induced an edge by Rajaguru (53) and Cobbold took a sharp catch behind the stumps. It was Cobbold again in the action when 12 runs later he took another fine catch to dismiss Matthew Taylor for 38 off the bowling of Jonah Handy. The home teams demise came quickly. Firstly a 3rd victim for Cobbold which saw him make a smart stumping to remove Levison for 3. This was Cariappa 3rd wicket as well. Then Loveday returned to bowl Todd for 1 and two balls later hit Mark Thomas on the front toe that saw him shaken to the core and out LBW for 0. Loveday finished with 4 for 31 and Swardeston were bowled out for 228
So Mildenhall recorded a first win of the season in what can be described as a gutsy performance and a never say die effort. Lets hope we get some warmer weather soon.
