Match report We won the toss and decided to bat.
The opening partnership looked as though it was too good for the bowler’s; Ben Palmer as elegant as ever and Connor Cobbold, not as elegant but belligerent and threatening as normal. From nowhere, in the 6th over, Ashton Lawrence induced Connor to lob the ball to a nearby fielder so he exited the scene for 6, with the total on 22. After a short holiday with the firsts, Tim Catley reappeared for the seconds and he and Ben set about repairing the situation, and this they did with aplomb. Both batsmen scored frequently and freely, and stayed at the crease for the next two hours or so, taking the score to 204 runs. With both batsmen within easy reach of a century the inexplicable happened! First Ben was out, caught for 86 off 124 and then in the next over, Tim suffered the same fate on 97 off 86. In the space of 2 overs we went from a partnership of 2 young players to two elderly statesmen, Worthy and Murty. However, this did not affect the scoring rate, quite the reverse in fact. For the rest of the innings,12 overs, they added another 120 runs with Pete also just falling short of a century, scoring 86 off 48 balls. Murty contributed with 34 off 35 and ran his socks off during his innings. Peter was finally out in the last over, caught trying to score another 6.
The home side’s innings is hardly worth reporting on. Suffice to say they lasted 38 overs scoring 138 in the process, all the bowlers contributing, 5 catches in the field, including an excellent one by Matt H, two more behind, and one splendid run-out by Jack Bowman.
All in all, a good all-round win which keeps us comfortably placed in the middle of the table. However, no place for complacency, Wivenhoe next week at home.
