Hadleigh CC, Suffolk 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat on Sat 07 Sep 2024 at 12.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost by 131 runs

Match report This was a dead match; Hadleigh knew they had no chance of catching Halstead and Mildenhall were safe from relegation. So, let’s concentrate on the positive features and ignore the result.
Hadleigh won the toss and decided to bat. Jamie bowled the first over conceding a wide and 1 run. I had been viewing the warm-up traditional game of football prior to the game, which always fills me with dread as I still recall last season when Darren Ironside suffered a bad leg injury in a similar game and was unable to play for the rest of the season. Fortunately, nothing similar happened here but I noticed a young scrap of a lad, with the name Ticehurst on his shirt, joining in. I thought he was probably the team mascot. I had missed the previous game and didn’t know that he had played then. So, I was amazed to see him take the ball for the second over. To my surprise, his first 4 overs were immaculate. He didn’t take any wickets but conceded two boundaries and three singles. His run-up was about 8 paces and he bowled fast enough to make their overseas player, Kudzai Maunze, stand up and take notice. Even more impressively he didn’t bowl any “wides”. Ok, his next 2 overs went for a few but he had done enough to impress especially as he is only 15! I think we have a potentially very good fast bowler in the club who needs some serious coaching
So, back to the match, Pi took over from Liam and probably because I had seen Pi bowl before was not surprised with his pace and economy but I can’t help thinking he needs to reduce the length of his run-up. With some coaching this could be sorted and we would have a couple of very good fast bowlers in the coming seasons. Pi got 2 wickets and the Allen boys got the other three but Hadleigh finished their innings with 335 runs which we knew would be too much for Mildenhall.
Captain Connor continued his impressive batting but was caught behind on 49 off 49 balls. Worthy contributed 55 from 56 balls but that was about it really.
Next week we are home to Mistley so an excellent opportunity to finish the season with a bang.
