Match report
MCC 2’s v Worlington CC
Local derbies tend to bring out the best in players and this one was no exception. MCC won the toss and put the opposition in.
Ben Cross and Jamie Allen bowled the first 10 overs without any success during which, the visitors scored 40 runs. Mo took over from Ben and it wasn’t until his 4th over that he trapped Summers LBW for our first wicket. Our second wicket took even longer, until the 38th over in fact, when Joe Reed had Tim Taylor caught in the deep for 47. The score was now 185 for 2 and looking ominous. Shortly after this there was a short break when one of the umpires decided to have a nap on the field, or that’s what it looked like from the scorebox! The next 2 wickets fell in the 45th over, firstly that of Graham Ford who had scored 104 runs and was caught by Matt Heywood in the deep. The last ball of the same over bowled Ollie Gallop for 5. The last wicket to fall was that of Sheahan, caught by Crossy off Reedy in the 48th over and after 2 more overs, Worlington had amassed 251 formidable runs for the loss of 5 wickets.
So, what would Mildenhall make of this total! Out marched Reedy and CC. After three balls, Reedy thumped the fourth for 4 scoring his first runs for Mildenhall since, I think, 2019. After last week’s duck, that must have been a relief. Our two openers carried on scoring freely until the 30th over when CC was bowled by Sheahan for 44 off 72. It was about this time that Joe Reed was feeling some distress from his groin and needed a runner. In came Ben Palmer who stayed with Reedy until the 42nd over when he was caught and bowled by Tim Taylor for 21 off 44. Despite his injury, Joe was still scoring freely until the 45th over when he was caught on the boundary attempting another 6, after scoring a 6 and a 2 off the first two balls of the over. His personal score was a magnificent 123, a strong runner for man-of-the-match award. The score was now 216 for 3 and we needed another 36 off 30 balls with Worthy and Ed Fletcher at the wicket. Ed lasted another 2 overs before he was caught for 4, Tom Griffin came in and was bowled by Woollard, Matt Heywood was quickly run out so in came Ben Cross. There were now 11 runs needed from 11 balls and the tension was rising and that was just in the scorebox!
Bearing in mind that Ben is selected for his bowling and not for his batting skills, what followed was incredible. His second ball was a precious wide, his fourth went for 4 to a great cheer from the crowd and his next for a single giving him the strike for the next over. All this time, Worthy, who could probably have scored all the runs needed in a couple of balls, was content to give Crossy his moment of glory and boy did he take it! The next over went dot, dot,2,2, and finally 4 to seal an improbable win. The crowd, all twenty-five of them, erupted.
So, my man-of-the-match award goes to Ben Cross for a performance above and beyond the call of duty. Considering there were two centuries scored, this was a well-earned award.
A great result lads, now for East Bergholt. Help! Where is East Bergholt!
