Easton CC 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat on Sat 17 May 2025 at 12.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 38
Match report
After a very pleasant drive through the tranquil countryside of east Suffolk, one found oneself at Easton CC, a very picturesque little cricket ground in the middle of nowhere. Settling in for what one thought would be a very pleasant afternoon with the sound of leather on willow, I was rudely brought to my senses.
Easton won the toss and opted to bowl. That was a surprise I thought but deliverance was not short in coming.
Joe, whose average score for our first four matches (including a “duck”) was 59, was soon to be seen hopping around the increase in some discomfort, as was Jamie, his opening partner. After 3 overs, they had managed to score 3 runs, 2 of which were wides, and lost the wicket of Jamie Allen who skied the ball to the slips. Three for 1 off 3 overs and Worthy, who too, had averaged 71 from 3 matches, was now at the crease. The next over was a maiden and off the first ball of the next, Worthy also edged one to the slips. Two for 4 off 4.1 overs! In the meantime, Joe, who had been fending off the ball which seemed to be coming at him from various heights, eventually succumbed in the 7th over having faced 20 balls for 1 run, bowled by Jones. We were 9 for 3 off 7 overs and in deep trouble.
The assassin of this slaughter was the Easton Aussie recruit, called Marcus Jones. He did look unplayable from where we were, but comments from the incoming batsmen about the pitch which they said, resembled the Gaza strip, may have been the cause of the mayhem. However, we seemed to wrest a bit of control from the bowlers as time went on and started to put a few runs on the board and lose wickets less frequently. The next wicket, that of Tom Allen, fell in the 12th over, having scored 13 from 25 balls, and Ben Cross lasted until the 18th over when he was caught for 19 off 33, the top score so far.
The next partnership of Tom Heywood and Murtaza Hussain was the highest of the innings, scoring 38 off 67 balls, closely followed by the last partnership of 37 from 36 balls between Tom Griffin and Mo Ubaid. After the disastrous start, we finished with a reasonable total but not one we thought would win the game. How wrong we were!
Tom Heywood opened the bowling and conceded a four and two wides. Ben Cross was next and with his third ball, completely bowled Ben Foreman and his fourth, had Toby Wright plumb LBW. Things were looking up but it took another 9 overs before we got our third wicket, well caught by Murty in the slips, off Tom Griffin. By this time they had scored 44, 16 of which were wides!! However, now Mildenhall had the upper hand and although the next wicket took another 10 overs, after that Easton succumbed to some tidy bowling from Tom Griffin, Mo Ubaid and, particularly Murty, who finished with 4 for 13 off 10 overs. Joe Reed came on at the end and had Wells, who had come in 2nd wicket down and had batted comfortably for 108 balls scoring 42 in the process, stumped with the second ball of his second over. In the end we won by 38 runs, a well crafted and deserved victory.
Man of the match: No question, with 29 runs off 42, and 4 for 13 off 10 overs, the ageless Murtaza Hussain.
