Braintree CC 1st X1 v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat on Sat 21 Jun 2025 at 12.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 73

Match report Today was not only the longest day of the year but probably the hottest one so far as well. Jamie won the toss and decided to bat. If his plan to exhaust the opposition in the field for several hours, post a decent score then bowl them out cheaply, would it succeed. We will see!
How would Joe perform today after a miserable 7 weeks of low scores. He survived the first 5 balls then clouted a 4. Connor repeated the act in the second over. 8 for no wicket – so far so good. The third over to Joe went for a maiden. Connor was out first ball of the next over, caught behind. In came Worthy who saw off the rest of the over. We were now 8 for 1. Joe clipped the first ball of the next over for 1, leaving Worthy to face the rest of the over. Joe scored another 4 in the next over and saw off the last 4 balls for no score. Then Worthy faced the next over with a dead bat so after 7 overs we had scored 17 for 1. You could sense Jos’s nervousness in the scorebox.
Then just as Saul of Tarsus had seen the light two thousand years ago, so did Joe this afternoon and whacked the next over for 17, four boundaries and a single to double the score. He was out a few overs later having scored 41 off 41 balls. What were we worried about?
Ben Palmer took over from Joe and he and Worthy put on 139 runs for the next wicket which was the best partnership of the game. Ben Cross was next in and immediately set about the bowlers scoring 33 off 22 balls and when Worthy was eventually out for another century in his illustrious career, scoring 120 off 117 balls, the score was 256 for 4. Tom Heywood entered the scene for the last 15 balls and managed to score another 22 runs which elevated our score to 288 to close the innings. This is probably the best total from the top 6 batsmen so far this season.
Not surprisingly the home side didn’t seem to have the stomach for winning this match although to be fair they were always well ahead in the run chase but were losing wickets too often. By the 26th over they had scored 143 compared to our 105 but had lost 5 wickets compared to our 2. . Nevertheless, we were well pleased to see Chris Leach, who had been a thorn in our side all innings, well caught in the deep by Ben Palmer off Tom Griffin
They were all out for 215 in the 40th over and two of their batsmen, Chris Leech and Jonathan Whiteoak had scored 101 of them. The tactics of batting first had been a total success.
This was a good all round effort by everybody but it would be ungracious of me not to award a certain player who scored 41 from 41 balls and 3 wickets for 53 off his quirky bowling, man of the match.
