MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat v Maldon CC 1st XI on Sat 30 Aug 2025 at 12.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 6
Match report
Well! That was a surprise. Maldon were completely in charge with Chris Harris at the helm when, without any reason, Maldon imploded and gifted the game to us.
Because of the threat of rain later, the umpires reduced the game to 40 overs per innings.
Maldon won the toss and opted to field. Connor and Worthy opened and were relatively untroubled for 11 overs scoring 74. In the 12th over Worthy mishit the first ball and gave a simple catch to Struan Carlisle the Maldon overseas player, also from Australia! Next in was Ben Cross and he and Connor batted comfortably for the next 13 overs taking the score to 119 when Ben was caught off Struan Carlisle. The top six batsmen all got into double figures without troubling the scorers too much except Connor who scored 88 before falling to a catch off Finlay Jones. Our final score was 206 for 6 off 40.
The Maldon openers batted comfortably scoring 56 until the 10th Over when Oliver Hull was caught and bowled by Heskey. In came Chris Harris who, with Ainscough, Pyecroft and Anderson, took the score to 182 for 4 off 35 overs and Maldon were looking dead certs to win the game. At that point rain stopped play and we thought we had been spared. Unfortunately, it only lasted about 10 minutes, and very little time was lost. Harris and Jones were now at the crease and out of the blue, Jones refused a run when Harris was halfway up the pitch and was run out for 68 off 81. In came Jamie Brown and before he had scored a run, Jones ran him out as well. Perhaps he was feeling bad about this so decided he better run himself out which he did 4 balls later. So, from 182 for 4 off 36 overs, needing 25 to win, they were now 193 for 7 off 38 overs needing 15 to win. That was too much and JKM, with the last ball of the match, JKM had the pleasure of having Monk caught by Mo in the deep, 7 runs short of the target.
This win moved us up to 7th in the league and with only two matches left, we look safe from relegation. Our next game is against Braintree who are doomed to relegation but let’s not get blase about it, we still need to win.
MOTM. Malden’s Finlay Jones, because we would never had won without his help!
