East Bergholt CC 1st X1 v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat on Sat 25 Apr 2026 at 12.00 noon
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 6 wickets
Match report
A bright, sunny, day with a slight chilly breeze set the scene for a fine day’s cricket at the lovely ground of East Bergholt in that beautiful part of Essex close to where Constable plied his trade.
The home side won the toss and decided to bat. Captain JKM opened the bowling with Liam Ticehurst (aged 17!) at the other end. The first 4 overs passed by quietly, with just a couple of boundaries and two singles then with the first ball of his third over, Liam clean bowled Daniel Gittings. Watching him bowl from a fairly long run-up, you would be forgiven for thinking that there were going to be a few “wides” bowled by this young man, but you would be wrong. In his first spell of 6 overs he conceded only 1 boundary and 0 wides and took 1 wicket. Liam was replaced by Ben Cross (aged 16!!) who bowled for the next 6 overs at a good fast pace and he too claimed his first wicket of the match by clean bowling James Baker in his second over. Eventually, he would go on to take another wicket and finish the innings with 2 for 51 off 10 overs. Liam finished with 2 for 59 off 10. Jacob, Mo, Murtaza and Jack Bowman all took a wicket a piece and the home side ran out of overs at 241 for 8 leaving us a good score to chase down.
Peter and Joe opened our innings and it must be said that Peter didn’t look at his usual fluid best. However this was probably because he had been keeping wicket due to a shortage of keepers this week, and would rather had been putting his legs up in the pavilion than being thrust into opening the innings. However, being the trooper that he is, he still managed to score 61 off 80 balls before being “adjudged” LBW in the 26th over!! Joe also had bludgeoned 26 off 20. By this time the target of 242 was looking a good way off. Jack Bowman was out shortly after, when the score was 156 for 4 and the target was looking even further away. When Tim Catley was bowled by Connor Oakley for a breezy 33 off 46 balls, Ben cross replaced him and had been slowly watching the ball scoring just 10 off his first 20 odd balls. When Murty entered the scene after the fall of JB, to join Ben , the two of them seemed to set about the bowling with abandon. They totally turned the game around and took the score from 156 for 4 to 242 to win it comfortably. This was the ‘Grande Finale’ to a great game and an excellent performance from the ‘2s ‘.
This was a team performance so no ‘MOTM’ this week. However, I must mention one notable act. I have watched JB play many times and I mean this as a compliment. Today was the first time I can remember seeing him drop a catch!! Don’t worry JB there has to be a first for everything.
