Hadleigh v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 16 May 2015 at 1.00p.m
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall 1st X1 won By 66 runs
Match report
Mildenhall 1stXI were missing five regular players and thus handed Division One debuts to brothers Jon and Matt Allen as they travelled to Hadleigh, who were bolstered by the return of Essex Academy’s Dom Manthorpe and Cambridge MCCU player Sam Handley.
Batting first the Mildenhall opening batsmen put on 78 runs before the first wicket fell in the 19th over.
This solid base enabled the middle order to build a total of 224-6 in the allotted 50 overs with notable contributions being made by Joe Reed (57), Steve Taylor (53) and Luke Turner (71 not out).
In reply Hadleigh got off to a flying start with Tom Piddington in particular taking a liking to the bowling of Steel.
Stand in Captain Steve Lankester was quick to switch the bowling around and Tom Allen bowled the dangerous Piddington but the score had already reached 47-1 in only the 7th over.
Steve Taylor then stepped up to the plate to take his first wicket for MCC removing his fellow Australian Dain Moreton for a duck.
Lankester then made the bold move of introducing Jon Allen into the attack and he quickly removed Tim Rix (18) caught at gully by Mirza Baig before having Dom: Manthorpe caught at short mid-wicket with the score at 85-4.
The introduction of spin in the form of Baig and Reed saw the demise of Marlon Dias (55) and then created some confusion in the minds of the Hadleigh batsmen as the two spinners carried Mildenhall to an impressive 66 run victory. The home team had lost their last 4 wickets for 5 runs.
Baig finished with figures of 3-43, Reed 2-15, Jon Allen 2-15 with the remaining wickets shared amongst Steel, Taylor and Tom Allen.
Next week MCC entertain Halstead at Wamil Way and selection is sure to be interesting with players returning trying to oust those who performed admirably at the weekend
